The Dermatology Advanced Practice Provider works under the supervision of a certified and licensed dermatologist. Responsibilities and duties include examining and diagnosing skin-related health concerns, administering treatments, and monitoring patient progress as well as the ability to write prescriptions and perform many procedures that treat various skin disease, cosmetic issues, and injuries.
- Assesses the physical and psychological status of patients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
- Examine patients with skin conditions.
- Assist with biopsies and perform skin cancer screenings.
- Assist with tattoo removal, chemical peels, and dermabrasion procedures.
- Place orders for various medical equipment and supplies.
- Orders different tests for diagnostic purposes, sub as lab tests, X rays, CT scans, electrocardiograms.
- Form different plans for treating patients which comprises of diagnosing diseases and deciding which care plans are best suited.
- Carry out patient examinations to collect information about what condition the patient is in physically.
- Assisting dermatologists during time of surgery
- Supervising and coordinating duties of procedural assistants.
- Providing patients with injections as well as certain shots and immunizations, along with wound care.
- Recognizes deviations from normal in physical assessment; works in collaboration with physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.
- Prescribe medication to patients under the supervision of a licensed dermatologist. This also includes prescribing therapy and referrals.
- Interprets and evaluates findings from diagnostic studies.
- Relays appropriate actions to facilitate and implement therapeutic plans consistent with the continuing care needs of the patient.
- Dictates or writes patient history, admission notes, care plans, progress notes, discharge notes and follow-up letters.
- Considers the physical, emotional, social, and economic status, as well as cultural and educational backgrounds of individuals, families and communities when providing care.
- Ensures that departmental and interdepartmental policies, procedures, and standards of care are maintained and assists in interpreting these to patients, visitors, and staff.
- Informs supervisors and/or the nurse supervisor of actual/potential problems that require resolution at the administrative level.
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, and compliance standards.
- Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, reading current literature, and participating in in-service meetings and workshops.
- Prepares other written documentation as required by the profession and the department; maintains, distributes, analyzes, and projects information for required records, reports and statistics as directed.
Requirements
- One year experience of outpatient dermatology
- Bachelor’s degree and completion of a Physician Assistant Certification Program recognized by the New York State Education Department.
- Physician Assistant Certification to Practice in New York State
- BLS Certification
