UESS departments and programs include: Office of Academic Advising (OAA), PathwayOregon, TRIO Student Support Services, Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence (CMAE)*, the Accessible Education Center (AEC), Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement (CURE), Office of Distinguished Scholarships (ODS), McNair Scholars Program, Academic Residential Communities (ARCs), First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs), Student Academy to Inspire Learning (SAIL), Tutoring and Academic Engagement Center (TAEC), and UESS Administration.

*NOTE: CMAE’s budgetary home is the Division of Equity and Inclusion (DEI), programs are administered jointly by the DEI and UESS.

Position Summary

The Assistant Vice Provost for Advising (AVPA) reports directly to the Vice Provost and supervises and oversees UESS’s direct student advising services, including: The Office of Academic Advising (OAA), PathwayOregon (POr), TRIO Student Support Services (SSS), and the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence (CMAE). Varying in mission and scope, these units support more than 19,000 undergraduate students who represent diverse academic interests, abilities, and cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.

As a key member of the student success leadership team, the Assistant Vice Provost for Advising (AVPA) will provide strategic campus-wide leadership to advance student success, including:

Advising leadership and expertise – The AVPA will represent the Vice Provost for UESS on various university committees positioning UESS as a leader in campus-wide student success work. The AVPA will champion best practices in academic advising, elevate awareness of the services offered by UESS, and highlight their measurable impact on student retention, and timely graduation outcomes. Key university partners include all schools/colleges advising leadership, Enrollment Management, and the Division of Student Life.

University-wide coordination – The AVPA will coordinate advising efforts within the division and across the university (with school/college advising leadership) on behalf of the VP of UESS. The AVPA will chair the Undergraduate Advising Council charged, in part, with creating a common first year advising experience, and adopting standard advising practices.

Direct effective services to students – The AVPA will be responsible for developing and implementing advising interventions, testing their efficacy in improving student retention and timely graduation, and using the results to make strategic programmatic decisions related to advising.

Assessment of advising - In alignment with Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) accreditation standards, the AVPA will work with the Director of Data and Assessment in UESS to ensure the systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of academic advising across the university to ensure that all students have knowledge of and access to appropriate programs and services that support their success.
