Position Summary

The Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Coordinator is a full-time position at Jewish Long Beach and the Alpert Jewish Community Center and reports to the Director of Fitness, Wellness, and Aquatics. The Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for Aquatics operations and the safety of the Aquatics Center. The Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Coordinator supervises pool activities. This includes providing feedback and supervision to all lifeguards, swim instructors, and other direct reports. The Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Coordinator will supervise administrative responsibilities for the Aquatics Center.  


Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Provide overall direction and supervision of Aquatics Center operations, including programs, lessons, and services. Ensure the safety of members and guests at the pool. 
  • Manage staff schedules.  
  • Train and supervise lifeguards and swim instructors. Provide ongoing training and feedback to aquatics staff; ensure all staff are familiar with emergency protocols, rules and regulations of the pool, and positive customer service procedures. 
  • Ensure the pool deck is always guarded, with adequate ratios of lifeguards to swimmers.  
  • Oversee the operations of the pool including maintaining pool equipment, monitoring water chemistry, and keeping up-to-date records; coordinate with AJCC maintenance staff as needed. 
  • Be on call if a situation arises at the Aquatics Center; administer CPR and First Aid when necessary. Know and train staff in the emergency procedures of the pool and the AJCC building. 
  • Coordinate coverage for pool, including Camp, ECE, members, and the public – including special events and everyday programs and activities. 
  • Coordinate coverage for pool rentals with AJCC Reservations and Rentals Manager. 
  • Maintain inventory and records of First Aid equipment and supplies for AJCC building. 
  • Lead by example. Provide exceptional customer service and maintain the highest quality of courtesy, friendliness, and service excellence for members, visitors, and other staff. 
  • Able to fill in and perform regular duties as Lifeguard and Swim Instructor. 
  • React to change productively; handle additional responsibilities and tasks as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong swimming skills 
  • Knowledge of lifesaving equipment, lifesaving techniques, and aquatics programming 
  • Ability to prioritize and remain organized while managing multiple details 
  • Excellent Customer Service skills 
  • Outstanding written and oral communication and interpersonal skills  
  • Ability to work well and efficiently with lifeguards and instructors, and other staff. 
  • Ability to enforce pool rules, regulations, maintain discipline, and exercise good judgement  
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) preferred 
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, WSI, CPR, AED, and F
