- The Senior Legal Counsel, Litigation will work in a wide range of practice areas, such as products liability, commercial litigation, class actions, corporate litigation, and employment litigation. The candidate will have the immediate opportunity to take depositions and participate in other discovery while working in an in-house environment. The candidate will have significant experience leading the defense for complex cases in a variety of jurisdictions including outside of the United States. As a subject matter expert, this individual applies a high degree of subject matter expertise with her/his legal background to develop litigation strategies for various types of litigation.
Major Areas of Accountability
- Respond to subpoenas and information demands received by the company
- Conduct investigations handling all aspects of the investigation and litigation
- Assist in the preparation of pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents
- Manage discovery in complex litigation settings including drafting interrogatories, interrogatory responses, document demands, and document responses
- Conduct depositions of fact witnesses and assist external counsel in preparing for trial
- Conduct legal research and fact investigation in assigned litigation cases
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop case and litigation strategies
- Independently communicate with external third parties regarding legal claims
- Lead and assist in out-of-court resolution of actions including settlement negotiations, mediation, and arbitration
- Manages and directs efforts of outside counsel
- Proactively and independently communicates to leaders and influences decision making
- Assesses litigation risks and develops appropriate, optimized, risk mitigation strategies in collaboration with the business and other support functions
- Work closely with clients, providing clear and concise explanations of complex legal concepts and ensuring their understanding of the legal implications
- Work with, and provide guidance to, less experienced attorneys on the team
- Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from US accredited law school
- Licensed attorney in the US and able to be admitted to the Bar in Minnesota
- Minimum 8-10 years legal experience as a practicing attorney in a litigation group
- Working knowledge of industry specific legal issues applicable to Coloplast’s businesses
- Experience conducting discovery, including written and deposition discovery
- Experience mediating and negotiating case settlements
- Must be proactive, flexible, responsive, and resourceful
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a collaborative member of a small team
- Demonstrated ability to effectively articulate position and provide direction to questions from a variety of internal and external customers in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 30% of the time
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in healthcare, pharmaceutical, medical device company preferred, but not required
- The ability to practice in multiple jurisdictions is welcomed, but not required
