PURPOSE

The Museum Registrar is responsible for the care, movement, conditioning and related documentation for all works of art in the art museum’s care. This is in regards of the Permanent Collection (currently 2026 works of art) and for borrowed exhibitions, and any assets that are art objects.

DESCRIPTION

Functional Area 1: Collection care and management

Percent Effort: 50%

• Transport, receiving art shipments, and outgoing shipments communication with borrowers and lenders

• Paperwork related to shipping, insurance, loans, condition reports

• Maintaining proper organization of the collection in storage, and updating the database as the collection changes in growth and movement

Functional Area 2:  Temporary exhibition

Percent Effort: 30%

• Contract agreements for loans, shipping,

• crating, insuring and condition reporting all works in the museum’s care

• Overseeing the standards of care related to light control, conservation, framing and storage of art temporarily, and assuring proper professional practices are followed with the movement of art and storage.

Functional Area 3: Transport and legal agreement, loans, condition reporting of all works in the museum’s care.

Percent Effort: 20%

• Obtaining quotes for services related to the crating, shipping and movement of art

•  Drawing up and completing loan agreements, communications to lenders and borrowers with related paperwork including insurance

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Art, Art History, or closely related field.

• Two years of experience in art collection presentation and or care.

• Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Strong proofreading skills and communication skills.

• Ability to be detail oriented and work independently once given a project.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Additional education, experience, skills that are preferred for this position. Masters in Art, Art History or closely related field of study

• Knowledge of American Alliance of Museums (AAM) standard museum principles and practices, collection management software (preferably Past Perfect) , word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
