Literacy Program Adaptations Fellow (IP)

Summary 

The School Age Learning and Wellbeing (SALW) team of the Department of Education and Child Protection is seeking a fellow for Fall 2024.  This virtual fellowship will provide you an opportunity to dive deep into the practicalities of supporting children to learn when their first language does not match up with the main language(s) of instruction in their classrooms. This role will work closely with two Sr. Advisors from the SALW team to develop new and/or updated guidance to Save the Children colleagues around the globe on how to support children who are struggling to learn to read and may be facing multiple challenges in their literacy learning journey.  Building off of recently developed draft guidance for Save the Children staff working in ‘highly’ multilingual contexts (which focuses on Southeast Asia countries), and other existing literacy and multilingual guidance, the fellow will research evidence-based multilingual strategies used in diverse low and middle income contexts across the globe – with a focus on supporting students who struggle the most with learning to read, reach out to experts in the field of multilingual literacy within and outside of Save the Children to gain insight into the latest state of the art for this area of education, and compile the learnings into a user-friendly guide for Save the Children global level staff. This may include developing multilingual focused session plans for parent/caregiver engagement workshops, following Save the Children’s Literacy Boost Caregiver Engagement Workshop model as well as other practical components for school or community/home side learning for children who live and learn in multilingual environments. This role will give you direct insight into what it’s like to work on the SALW team, giving you a “behind the curtain” perspective into how our education teams collaborate with one another to create lasting impact in children’s lives.

What You’ll be Doing

• Desk Research in multilingual learning strategies for students struggling to learn to read
• Plan and conduct informational interviews with Save the Children staff around the globe and external experts in multilingual literacy for children in low and middle income contexts
• Develop supplemental remediation tools/guidance for multilingual learners to accompany forthcoming Dyslexia guidance
• As time allows, develop wrap-around guidance and/or a landing page for the remediation tools and SE Asian contexts-specific multilingual guidance, to orient Save the Children staff from any region to the sections of the guidance that are most relevant to their context.

Required Qualifications

• Must be an actively enrolled in an Associate, Bachelor, Master or other post high school education program, or have graduated within 6 months of intern program start date
• Possess strong written skills, solid interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team
• Proficient in Microsoft Office
• Currently eligible to work in the U.S.
• Previous experience with education programs

Preferred Qualifications

• Cross-cultural communication skills – oral and written
• Ideal if speaks a language other than English fluently
• Previous experience teaching children, ideally teaching them to read in multilingual contexts

Time expectations:      30-36 hours per week (up to 8 hours max per day, 420 hours total over the course of the Fellowship)
