About the role

The Health Education Specialist will work on a National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases-funded cluster randomized clinical trial. The study will recruit 336 English and/or Spanish speaking adults with kidney failure to evaluate the impact of Health Education Specialist’s and provider education on completion of a transplant evaluation compared to usual care.  Intervention providers will receive education on reducing bias in clinical decision-making, and increasing affirming/reducing stigmatizing language in electronic health records. Working with the intervention providers, the Health Education Specialist will guide intervention participants through the kidney transplant process by addressing unmet social needs and participant symptoms through evaluations and referring them to vetted clinical and community services, along with providing participants with education on the kidney transplantation (KTx) process. The Health Education Specialist will also work closely with the vetted clinical and community service organizations to ensure there is closed loop feedback with referrals and adequate response times for provided services. 

 

The Health Education Specialist will interface with participants at clinical sites throughout the Mount Sinai health system. They will report directly to the Senior Program Manager and Principal Investigators for this study.

The Health Education Specialist’s specific duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Regularly corresponding with study participants in person and via phone to schedule appointments, complete follow-up data collection/surveys, evaluate them for unmet social needs through interviews/surveys, link them to necessary clinical and community services, track their progress, and keep participants motivated and engaged in the study
  • Provide participants KTx process education through culturally-tailored trainings
  • Develop new and foster existing relationships with clinical personnel at study recruitment sites, and staff at the clinical and community service organizations to support enrollment
  • Participate in regular teleconferences, study team meetings, etc.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned
  • Work as part of a Healthcare team
  • Working with providers and clinical and community service organizations to track participant engagement, and ensure there is closed loop feedback with referrals
  • Collecting, maintaining and organizing study information using electronic databases, including logs and participant files to track progress and outcomes
  • Attend trainings as require by the research study team
  • Provide routine updates to trial supervisor(s) and other assigned contacts to ensure timely communication regarding status of participants, issues and resolutions, and trial activities.
  • Willingness to travel across study sites in Manhattan and the Bronx

Hours: Part-time; flexible schedule is required 

Job Qualifications:  

  • High School Diploma preferred
  • Fluency in English and Spanish required 
  • Applicants with kidney disease and/or kidney transplant experiences (or direct caretaking/support experience for someone who has undergone a kidney transplant/dialysis) is required 
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to establish and promote positive business relationships; customer service oriented
  • Previous clinical research experience and experience working with diverse populations and urban communities is strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office preferred
  • Highly motivated, have excellent oral and written communication skills, a team player, highly attentive to detail and very organized; and must be able to work in a multidisciplinary field and fast-paced environment. 

     

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for this role is $16.00 - $50.00 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
