About the role

Scope:
Under the supervision of the High School Cafeteria Manager, the School Cafeteria Cashier performs routine cashiering and computer-related tasks to support daily food service operations. This position requires accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to exercise independent judgment and problem-solving skills. The Cashier plays a key role in ensuring students are served efficiently while maintaining compliance with food service regulations and financial accountability standards.

Examples of Job Duties:

  • Enters pre-payments into the point-of-sale (POS) system prior to breakfast and lunch service.
  • Prepares the cash register for daily operations, including setting up the cash drawer with appropriate change.
  • Monitors dietary notes and alerts in the POS system to prevent students with food allergies from receiving restricted food items.
  • Accurately rings sales into the POS system for meals, milk, and � la carte items; collects correct payment and returns change.
  • Understands and applies National School Lunch, Breakfast, and Snack Program regulations to ensure accurate classification of reimbursable meals.
  • Operates basic kitchen tools and utensils to assist with food preparation tasks as needed (e.g., weighing, washing, peeling, mixing).
  • Assists with food preparation and food service, ensuring proper handling and storage temperatures.
  • Inspects and maintains cleanliness and service standards at assigned workstations.
  • Maintains records and submits supply or equipment requests as needed.
  • Cleans and sanitizes all work areas, utensils, and equipment in accordance with School Lunch policies and health regulations.
  • Counts cash drawer, records totals, prepares bank deposit slips, and secures funds in a locked or tamper-resistant bank bag at the end of each day.
  • Maintains confidentiality and complies with USDA regulations by preventing overt identification of student meal eligibility status.
  • Greets students, staff, and visitors in a friendly and helpful manner; responds to inquiries or refers concerns to the Cook Manager.
  • Contributes to a positive school environment through courteous conduct, neat appearance, and professional interactions.
  • Attends required staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
  • Assists with restocking supplies, general cleaning, and other kitchen tasks as time allows.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area; practices proper personal hygiene and dress code compliance.
  • Operates kitchen equipment safely (e.g., cash register, dishwasher) and reports any malfunctions.
  • Adheres to strict sanitation protocols, including proper glove use and food safety practices.
  • Completes assigned tasks efficiently and assists coworkers with other duties when cashiering responsibilities are not being performed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Cook Manager, High School Manager, or Food Service Manager.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic math and the ability to handle cash transactions accurately.
  • Proficiency with computers, including point-of-sale systems and basic recordkeeping tools.
  • Understanding of safe food handling, sanitation, and safety practices.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently during peak meal service times.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with coworkers, students, and staff.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to safely operate kitchen equipment and follow all safety procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a neat, clean personal appearance and follow hygiene guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience handling cash
  • Must have working knowledge of basic math applications and computations skills

 Working Environment & Equipment Used: The job's functions requires the following physical demands: occasional lifting (30 pounds maximum), carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant reaching, handling, speaking, writing, hearing, and fine finger dexterity; frequent standing, walking, and sitting, and lifting up to 30 pounds. High volume of work and strict adherence to workload may be stressful. . 

Rate of Pay:
$21.19 per hour
Monday - Friday - 8:14 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (4.75 hours total per day)
