Role Purpose

We are looking for a senior analyst to join our global Thermal Coal Markets Research team. This role will be based in Houston but other US based locations will be considered. The successful candidate will join a global team of well-established experts. As part of the Metals and Mining Research Unit, the Thermal Coal Markets team is responsible for delivering comprehensive research coverage of global thermal coal markets, covering supply, demand, and pricing. Wood Mackenzie’s high-quality thermal coal research provides value to our clients, by providing a guide to the rapidly transitioning energy sector and assisting clients to make the best commercial decisions to secure their business success.

Main Responsibilities

  • As part of a world-class team of industry experts and reporting to the Global Head of Thermal Coal Markets, you will conduct original quantitative and qualitative research on global thermal coal demand, supply and price forecasting and deliver analysis through the creation of data services, proprietary data, written reports, public speaking, and custom research engagements. This role will involve projecting the trajectory and trends of the US and European thermal coal market in the short (3-year window) to long-term (30-year window) including demand, supply, and price forecasting. There is specific focus on seaborne markets. Further, you will work closely with members across the commodities, energy, and natural resources business globally to help determine our view of the pace and shape of the energy transition. You will produce regular and timely deliverables about the thermal coal market.
  • You will have good knowledge of commodity product behaviours, and the capability to identify key drivers (such as macroeconomic indicators, industrial/consumer activities, domestic prices, etc.) so that their effects on production, demand, price and trade are quantified in models by product and sector.
  • You will be responsible for developing and publishing opinion-rich, thematic Thermal Coal Markets related content, with minimal support. Quickly recognising major Thermal Coal Markets trends and engaging readily with senior external and internal stakeholders including cross commodity analysis.
  • Hugely inquisitive with a desire to seek out information to support theses. Comfortable challenging and being challenged and effective at adapting engagement style and tone to reflect counterparty approach. Striving to be a recognized authority (internally and externally) on global thermal coal demand
  • Have a proven ability to see the high-level strategic picture in complex evidence and able to condense multifaceted issues into clear and concise messages. Comfortable with uncertainty and offering an opinion.
  • Routinely involved in dialogue with clients at differing levels of seniority and regularly in demand for advice and commentary. Very good at building relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Leverage Marketing to establish a personal profile on Woodmac.com and social media to grow your brand and market presence.
  • Coach and mentor to a diverse team of analysts, both in office and globally.

About You

  • You are degree-qualified in a relevant discipline (Economics, Business, Mining, Geology, Engineering etc.) and have experience in the metals and mining sectors. Your previous experience includes knowledge of the global seaborne thermal coal market including generating forecasts for demand and key benchmark seaborne pricing. You may also have experience with mines, traders, power and renewable end-use or other users of thermal coal and experience with their operations. You understand coal’s current role in the energy space and how it
