Job Title: Senior Accountant – Lease and Technical Accounting

Location: Henderson, NC (or remote)

Department: Accounting

Reports To: Assistant Controller

 

Job Summary:

 

We are looking for a Senior Accountant with strong expertise in lease accounting and technical accounting to support our growing retail operations. This role is instrumental in managing a high volume of retail lease agreements and ensuring compliance with ASC 842 and other technical accounting standards. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment and work closely with cross-functional teams, including real estate, store operations, and legal, to support accurate financial reporting and lease compliance.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Lease Accounting (ASC 842):

  • Manage accounting for a large portfolio of retail store leases, including new leases, renewals, modifications, and terminations.
  • Ensure compliance with ASC 842, including appropriate lease classification, recognition, and disclosure.
  • Partner with the real estate and legal teams to review lease terms and assess accounting implications.
  • Maintain lease schedules and work with lease accounting software to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform periodic lease audits, reconciliations, and ROU asset and liability roll forwards.

Technical Accounting:

  • Research and interpret GAAP guidance related to leases, fixed assets, revenue recognition, and other complex areas specific to the retail industry.
  • Prepare technical accounting memos and documentation to support accounting positions and audits.
  • Monitor new accounting pronouncements and evaluate their impact on the retail business model.
  • Assist in drafting footnote disclosures for financial reporting.

General Accounting and Reporting:

  • Participate in month-end and quarter-end close activities including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis for lease and technical accounting areas.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and provide required documentation and analysis.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts, particularly in scaling processes to accommodate retail expansion.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or progress toward CPA preferred).
  • 4–7 years of accounting experience, ideally within the retail industry or with retail clients in public accounting.
  • Strong knowledge of ASC 842 and other GAAP relevant to retail operations.
  • Proven experience leveraging Microsoft Excel to perform data analysis
  • Experience with high-volume lease portfolios and lease accounting systems (e.g., LeaseQuery, CoStar, Lucernex, Tango Analytics).
  • Familiarity with ERP systems (AS400 system experience a plus).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with multiple business functions.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with multi-location retail or franchise businesses.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, evolving retail environment.
  • Advanced data analysis skills (Power BI, SQL, Python) are a big plus.
