Role overview

DUAL North America is seeking an Assistant Vice President in Underwriting for the Energy division.  

At DUAL, the AVP leads a team of underwriters, setting and executing production goals aligned with divisional strategy. This role combines portfolio management with leadership, including coaching and performance management. The AVP is responsible for underwriting complex risks, developing key producer relationships, and driving business growth as a subject matter expert.

Leading and supporting a team of underwriters in the energy division, you will manage underwriting for upstream, midstream, and renewable energy risks and collaborate with actuarial and claims teams to enhance risk frameworks and pricing models.

Role responsibilities

• Portfolio Management: Drive profitability of the DUAL Energy Casualty Program. Monitor and manage the performance of the Energy insurance portfolio, adjusting underwriting strategies as needed.

• Underwriter Team Management: Guide the Underwriting team in the analysis of accounts and risk selection and pricing.

• Broker & Client Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and insureds to drive business development and client satisfaction.

• Market & Industry Analysis: Stay informed about market trends, industry developments, and regulatory changes affecting energy insurance.

• Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all underwriting activities comply with company

policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

• Collaboration: Work closely with other departments such as claims, actuarial, and loss prevention to enhance underwriting decisions and risk management strategies.

• Business Development: Identify and pursue opportunities for growth, including new products, markets, and distribution channels.

• Drive profitability on the DUAL Energy Casualty Program

• Lead and manage the underwriting team for the “rest of the country” in the Energy Program, ensuring operational excellence and consistency.

• Review complex underwriting referrals and provide strategic guidance to underwriters.

• Lead marketing and business development initiatives in collaboration with distribution partners to grow the book of business.

• Cultivate strong relationships with key wholesale brokers; serve as the underwriting point of contact for high-priority accounts and strategic partners.

• Represent the Energy Program in industry events, conferences, and broker meetings to promote brand visibility and thought leadership.

• Ensure underwriting compliance through internal audits, file reviews, and oversight of underwriting authorities.

• Monitor and analyze underwriting performance metrics to ensure profitability and sustainable growth.

• Mentor and develop underwriting staff to elevate technical expertise and overall team capability.

Key requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in risk management, finance, business, or a related field strongly preferred

• Professional certifications such as CPCU, AU, or similar designations strongly preferred

• 8-10 years of relevant underwriting experience, with leadership exposure

• In-depth understanding of technical underwriting principles and risk assessment

• Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills

• Proven ability to manage and build broker and client relationships

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

• Demonstrated ability to handle complex risks with sound judgment

• Highly self-motivated with strong attention to detail

• Ability to travel up to 20% or more as required for client meetings, conferences, or industry events

• Must be able to remain in a stationary position approximately 50% of the time, with occasional movement throughout the office to access files and equipment
