I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Performs clerical functions on the patient care unit and/or other patient care areas as needed during downtime.
2. Assembles patient records.
3. Files and documents patient information, i.e., Laboratory and X-ray reports.
4. Keeps records up-to-date, in order, and supplied with appropriate forms.
5. Transcribes physician orders accurately and timely.
6. Facilitates effective communication and coordinates unit activities.
7. Answers telephone appropriately and courteously, triage calls.
8. Takes and relays messages in a timely manner.
9. Places calls as requested to physicians, and other professional or ancillary services.
10. Greets and directs visitors, physician, and staff from other departments.
11. Assists in facilitation of patient flow through the department, taking the appropriate steps to report and resolve issues.
12. Opens, sorts and routes mail accurately and in a timely manner.
13. Assembles medical records, lab, and radiological reports.
14. Assists with quality assurance/improvement projects.
15. Enters laboratory and radiological orders into computerized order entry system.
16. Distributes staff memos/mail.
17. Orders patient dietary needs.
18. Files patient records, ensures appropriate records faxed to PMD.
19. Orders, receives and stocks required inventory of stationery, and forms (supplies for pediatric patients, linen, sterile supplies, food, and kitchen supplies as requested).
20. Assists the Director by performing administrative duties as requested.
21. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, and according to hospital and departmental policies and procedures, assists the professional nurse in the collection of data and in the care and treatment of patients.
22. Accurately and as directed obtains and records patient data; vital signs, 12 lead EKGs, testing of specimens, patient weights and measurements, Intake and Output.
