About the role

R&D Technician

Position Overview:

This position executes manufacturing operations on prototype and research samples, as directed by the Prototype Supervisor. The technician is also responsible for documenting equipment parameters, recipes, and key attributes for completed operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform manufacturing functions on research and prototype orders
  • Independently execute the following operations for all product types:
    • Machine set-up, shut down, and changeover
    • Tacking
    • Lamination
    • Laser engraving
    • Material preparation: sub assembly/surface finishes
    • Industrial inkjet
    • Laser cutting
    • Precision leveling
    • CNC milling / engraving
    • Stamping and embedding
    • Final inspection and packing
  • Understand expectations of work instruction set
  • Document all parameters and processes for future repeatability
  • Ensure high quality of all products while continually verifying accuracy of settings
  • Record processing/quality issues and resolution
  • Elevate to manager any manufacturing or equipment concerns
  • Coordinate with other team members within the prototype group
  • Identify and understand various materials used in build
  • Assist research engineers as required

Other Important Responsibilities:

  • Maintain inventory and retain control
  • Update project status tracking software
  • Work with team to match previously targeted color samples
  • Assist production when necessary
  • Timely corrective action response and resolution to relevant project situations
  • Engage and support companywide safety and cleanliness programs
  • Operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of work experience
  • Associate degree in related field preferred
  • Enthusiastic attitude, flexible to new or changing circumstances, professional demeanor, sensitive to client needs, self-motivated, creative and innovative
  • Ability to function as an active team member with limited supervision
  • Excellent communication, problem solving, and time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to self-check own work
  • Task oriented with superior organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload
  • Ability to accept responsibility and account for own actions
  • Capable of understanding and carrying out oral and written directives
  • Computer literacy including working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Use of precision measuring tools such as micrometers and caliper

Physical requirements and work environment:

  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs
  • Must be able to sustain office work for 8+ hours per day including the following:
    • Sitting in an office chair
    • Typing
    • Reaching for the telephone
    • Standing at office equipment
    • Hearing for phone use
    • Sight for computer use
  • Must be able to sustain factory work as needed including the following:
    • Standing at machinery
    • Reaching and pulling to operate machinery
    • Sight for machinery operation
    • Walking through shop
  • Office environment is of moderate noise level
  • Shop noise levels are such that protective ear-coverings are recommended
  • Short notice, overtime and some weekend demand according to production needs
