Lead API & Business Services Engineer

The API & Business Services Engineer performs a critical function in support of this goal and the ongoing evolution of our technology and platform strategy: driving the implementation of data integration and event notification services for numerous user-facing functions and capabilities that provide for scalable ‘in the moment’ patient care and guidance.

While this role is focused on hands-on implementation of new and evolving capabilities to exchange data bidirectionally with our platform at scale, it is also one that is expected to innovate and evolve the related patterns and practices for data services (API, streaming, event pub-sub, etc.) across the engineering organization. We are looking for people who want to shape the evolution of our platform and associated capabilities as we move into exciting new domains of technology and software engineering models.

In addition to the above, some specific success criteria in this role:

• Direct (hands-on) participation in the implementation of data services frameworks, patterns, and non-functional support capabilities

• Ability to guide engineering resources towards optimal models of modern software engineering, incorporating quality and time-to-market objectives pragmatically

• Leadership of software engineers to guide towards next evolution of their career objectives, with consistent principles and servant leader mindset

• Implementation of next generation interoperability capabilities with pragmatic balance of cutting edge vs. ‘tried-and-true' technology frameworks

• Role model and influence a proactive approach to anticipating challenges for team to intentionally navigate to optimal outcomes

What you’ll do…

• Work in conjunction with engineering leadership to incorporate strategic objectives and define work plans and resource mobilization models for team

• Ensure effective execution by self and team to achieve delivery objectives

• Provide strategic input and influence with internal and external stakeholders in the domain of general data interoperability (APIs, streaming, batch)

• Mentor junior engineers in modern software engineering models that focus on contract-first development, shift-left of design and test functions, and distributed software development and release collaboration models.

• Mentor engineers and stakeholders in the development and deployment constraints and patterns for scalable platform API edge services

About you…

• 8+ years working in high-volume data services use cases (API, data mesh, microservices, etc.)

• 10+ years in software development for moderate-to-large organizations with mature information technology and software engineering practices

• 5+ years working in software Director role, with management and team leadership responsibilities

• 5+ years experience with API development and data access patterns using Node.js and relevant data access models/frameworks (Express, Nest.js, etc.)

• Experience with service contract models for synchronous and asynchronous API/RPC (ex: OpenAPI/Swagger, AsyncAPI)

• Proven implementation experience and familiarity with variety of data exchange models, including HTTP or RPC-based APIs, streaming / event subscription models (SSE, Webhook), and batch exchange models

• Deep knowledge of data exchange / API patterns and various models and tool suites for implementation (enterprise service bus, service mesh, edge API/transport gateways)

• Familiarity with design patterns and architecture models relevant to data exchange (service-oriented architectures, event-driven architectures, data vs. Integration layers, etc.)

• Experience in various API gateway and service proxy models, and associated security patterns

• Experience in non-functional scaling patterns for data services (caching, stateless service design, referent models/HATEOS, and others)
