About the role

DroneUp is seeking a highly motivated Sr. Flight Simulation Engineer to work in a collaborative environment of our Systems Innovations- and other product teams inside the Department of Systems Engineering on flight simulation projects. The primary focus is on HIL and cloud-based SIL simulations to enable flight testing of our UAV stack, including the incorporation of a real-world 3D environment, integration of our path-planning solution, modeling of UAS energy performance, validation of functional components, physics modeling and analytics around safety, performance, and usability. We also plan to build out virtual training capabilities for our operational staff of air- and ground equipment, utilizing the same simulation suite.

The Sr. Simulation Engineer would work on designing and developing our toolchain together with selected vendors to then carry out studies producing intelligence on all the technical aspects of our drone-delivery operations including, UI/UX, system trades and -performance, vendor evaluations, review of specification and test plans, virtual prototype demos, transfer of technology into production and related tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Design and Development of DroneUp’s simulation tool suite for flight-testing in software and hardware (local HiL/SiL-setup as well as cloud-based deployment)
  • Provide support with the integration of Hardware and Software into the simulator environment
  • Provide intensive coordination with the relevant departments (aircraft, mission control, flight-testing, systems engineering, etc.)
  • Provide input to the selection process of appropriate vendors & partners
  • Design of proper interfaces for Hardware and User-Interface
  • Validation of the aircraft simulation models using bench and flight test data
  • Provide assistance with planning and execution of the simulator qualification
  • Support the documentation and presentation of the work progress
  • Work with internal stakeholders in product development and our pilot qualifications team
  • Oversee simulation execution and provide guidance in the analysis of produced data
  • Problem-Solving, Root Cause/Corrective Actions
  • Supports Operational Metrics for Quality, Schedule, Cost, and Productivity

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree (or Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics or a similar field with minimum 10 years of relevant experience
  • 5 years experience in 6DOF modeling and simulation in the aerospace industry
  • Experience in simulation tools like Matlab/Simulink, Airsim, Gazebo, Xplane, Unreal Engine
  • Experience with docker, experience with Kubernetes a plus
  • Good knowledge of Newtonian, flight physics (bank angles, inertia, kinetic energy, climb rate)
  • Experience in statistical data analysis and data visualization, including python
