About the role

The Fleet Safety Manager will report directly to the Fleet Safety Director and is responsible for coordinating company-wide activities as they relate to Fleet Department of Transportation (DOT/FMCSA) training and driver certifications.  Responsible for establishing, leading, and maintaining Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance policies and safety specific courses through a regimen of training, inspections, and audits across the company.  Train drivers on all appropriate DOT safety subject matter as directed.  Assume responsibility for the conduct of all fleet safety inspections, audits, and routine examinations of facility fleet operations to ensure they are free of recognized hazards and all established rules and procedures are being followed.  Provide driver training to drivers and provide guidance and advice to facility management with regard to all Fleet Safety related topics.  Serve as a liaison between facilities and Regional and Corporate Safety leadership. 

Annual Compensation Range: $155,000.00-$175,000.00

Essential Functions:

  • Working knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR’s) and federal minimum requirements for commercial vehicle drivers.
  • Train drivers on safe driving practices utilizing company SOPs, JSAs, and company issued training materials.
  • Conduct fleet DOT audits, inspections, or reviews to ensure compliance.
  • Exercise independent judgment and discretion in certifying new and existing drivers according to DOT requirements/standards.
  • Determine commercial driver training, retraining needs, and proficiency requirements as determined by safety programs and procedures.
  • Assist, identify, monitor, and communicate with Fleet Safety Director about drivers displaying unsatisfactory or marginal driving skills and recommend/provide remedial actions, equipment restrictions, and other corrective measures.
  • Establish, maintain and/or support standards of driver personal conduct and discipline, in accordance with the current discipline policy while onsite at Radius locations.
  • Understand established procedures and federal regulations regarding DOT requirements and refine driver training programs to comply with the law and internal Radius requirements
  • Rides with drivers and evaluates them to ensure they meet requirements and provide Fleet Safety Director with performance evaluation data on same.
  • Monitor driver performance for adherence to DOT safety SOPs and procedures and qualifications.
  • Monitor federal SAFER portals to observe company Behavioral Analysis Safety Improvement Categories (BASIC’s) and Inspection Selection System scores; be able to provide recommendations based on trends and observations.
  • Monitor company J.J. Keller accounts to ensure all roadside inspections are reviewed and corrective actions are completed; work with FSD, RLMs, local staff and drivers to identify root cause of discovered infractions and progressive discipline.
  • File Data Q requests on DOT infractions which do not meet alleged regulatory standards.
  • Ensure company is compliant with the Electronic Logging Devices (ELD) mandate.
  • Review daily Electronic Logging (ELD) data and work with local staff to rectify log inaccuracies, unassigned miles; work with RLM’s to issue corrective action and progressive discipline to drivers not abiding by hours-of-service rules.
  • Assist FSD and Risk Management with ensuring the most up to date fleet inventory.
  • Assist FSC with reviewing driver safety data for quarterly driver incentive bonus.
  • Other duties as assigned by FSD.

Job Conditions:

Office and active field working environment at various locations. It is necessary to be able to walk/climb in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces and to out-of-the-way areas. Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions and travel is required. Regional and domestic travel required. 

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:

Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds occasionally; be mobile within an office and field environment; operate an automobile; be mobile to travel frequently by auto and airplane to local and regional locations; climb; negotiate uneven surfaces; sit, stand, and/or walk for extended periods of time; keyboard for up to several hours per day; and communicate in a professional manner in person and by phone.

Qualifications:

  •  Associates degree or equivalent from a two year college or tech school, or equivalent combination of education and experiences.
