Sr Safety & Health Consultant

Salary Range: $88,000 - $95,000

Position Summary:

This position typically reports to an Assistant Director, Associate Director, or other appropriate administrator within the department. A Safety & Health Consultant is typically assigned to provide consultation/inspection services to small businesses in a specific region of the State; therefore, the incumbent may work from a home workstation in that assigned region. This position receives direction in the form of program objectives and project assignments. This position must determine how these objectives and projects will be completed. This involves using discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance when consulting with small businesses on health and safety concerns and in determining the best recommendations to offer the businesses to reach compliance with OSHA regulations. To be successful in this exempt position, an incumbent must have thorough knowledge of occupational safety and health, particularly Federal OSHA regulations and guidelines; training development and delivery for adult education; industrial hygiene; worker’s compensation; and the ability to communicate these knowledge areas to employers, the public, staff, and students. This position must also be able to establish positive working relationships with local, state and federal safety and health compliance agencies.

Schedules, prepares, travels, and provides on-site consultation services and/or inspections of small businesses with regard to safety and health regulations.
   
Interviews employees and management to formulate and appraise workplace safety and health management systems. Provides formal and informal instructions to reduce injury/illness rates, workers’ compensation premiums and the recurrence of near miss incidents and accidents.
 
Coaches and instructs employers in accident analyses to determine injury/illness trends; advocates, assists and guides employers to be self reliant and self sufficient in all aspects relating to occupational safety and health.
    
Conducts full-shift employee monitoring and collects samples to determine the workplace exposures of employees to toxic chemical and physical agents.
   
Interprets/analyzes technical data and calculations obtained from conducting site visits.
    
Guides employers in developing and implementing a facility-specific safety and health management system; assists in development of an “action plan” to correct hazards identified in the workplace.
    
Prepares formal reports; ensures accurate and timely data entry and documentation of reports in accordance with occupational safety and health regulations and federal guidelines.
    
Works with line supervisors to incorporate safety procedures into their electrical, mechanical and facilities management plans, procedures.
    
Develops techniques for safety directors to better train their employees and mangers at the facilities.
    
Develops and implements statewide training and education programs for small businesses throughout the State of Florida.
    
Creates training materials, and makes both formal and informal presentations to employers as well as students attending classes sponsored by USF Training Institute Education Center. Researches web to provide most current safety and health technology; explores and investigates economically feasible engineering and administrative industrial hygiene, safety controls, and personal protective equipment for employer implementation.
    
Participates on various safety and health local and state committees, and safety and health fair planning committees.
    
Completes administrative functions related to the functions of the position.
    
Provides technical expertise to assess the effectiveness of employers’ safety and health management system and determine regulatory compliance.
    
Resolves complex health and safety challenges through collaboration with employers and employees in providing best-in-class risk reduction recommendations. Responsible for the day-to-day field activity of reports and case files to ensure all operational procedures are followed and in compliance with, OSHA’s Consultation Policy and Procedure Manual (CPPM).
    
Ensures the maximum exposure of the consultation services through participation in seminars, workshops and conferences highlighting the business value of health and safety and presents training materials both formally and informally to employers as well as students attending classes sponsored by the USF OSHA Training Institute Education Center.
    
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a Physical science, Engineering or related field, with 4+ years experience in a safety and health consultation or inspect
