BASIC FUNCTION:

Howard University seeks a seasoned business administrator with expertise in research or contracts and grants management to join the expanding HU research enterprise. This leader is central to ensuring efficient and effective financial processes, procedures, and systems that advance HU’s research footprint. In addition, to fiscal management the Sr. Director of Research Operations will also oversee the Interdisciplinary Research Building (IRB) team, Office of Research communications, training, and outreach efforts.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Sr. Director of Research Operations will supervise department staff, including those involved in scheduling, travel arrangements, and procurement management.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Sr. Director of Research Operations will oversee operations related to the university's research activities, including financial management, communications, and IRB initiatives. This role requires close collaboration with the Office of Research senior staff and other university departments in order to advise the senior vice president and senior staff on matters of importance to the research enterprise.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:      

• Strategic Leadership in Research Operations: Provide leadership in setting goals and priorities for Research Operations. Define and evaluate strategic alternatives, develop financial models, and provide recommendations for action. Serve as an ambassador for Research Operations internally and externally.
• Management of Interdisciplinary Research Building: Oversee the administration and operations of the interdisciplinary research building, ensuring optimal utilization and fostering collaboration across disciplines.
• Research Communications, Training, and Outreach: Develop and implement strategies for internal and external communications related to research activities. Lead and support training programs and outreach initiatives to engage various stakeholders, including faculty, students, and external partners.
• Financial Management: Oversee fiscal management, including funding analysis, budget planning, and expenditure reporting for OOR. Develop financial strategies, manage budgeting processes, and ensure compliance with financial regulations.
• Support for Strategic Initiatives: Drive and track progress on major initiatives, ensuring deadlines are met. Collaborate with senior leaders on strategic activities, including partnership formation and team building.
• Procurements and Travel Management: Manage all procurements and travel arrangements for OOR personnel and events. Ensure efficient and cost-effective processes are followed, complying with university policies and procedures.
