JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State University Press seeks a bright, energetic intern to assist our journals production department. The candidate will provide support for two production coordinators as they guide manuscripts through the publication process from receipt of accepted articles through print and online publication. Responsibilities may include processing and preparing manuscripts, assessing copyediting, reviewing layout proof formatting, managing and checking proof corrections, verifying image quality, reviewing online editions, as well as basic file management and data entry. This is a demanding but exciting job at a scholarly press with a wide range of journals in history, philosophy, language, communication studies, religious studies, and the social sciences.

This internship is available only to full-time Penn State University juniors or seniors “exhibiting academic excellence.” The successful candidate will be efficient, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize work and function independently. Candidates should also have a strong interest in publishing as a career, but do not need to be English majors. Excellent oral and written communication skills and good organizational abilities are essential. Interns must possess the ability to interact effectively with individuals from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. This internship is excellent training for any career path in publishing. Penn State University Press interns have gone on to work with such publishers as Elsevier, McGraw-Hill, Houghton-Mifflin, Avon Books, MIT Press, NYU Press, Oxford University Press, Princeton University Press, O’Reilly & Associates, University of California Press, Thames & Hudson, and other institutions such as libraries, museums, and communications companies.

The internship is being offered for summer and fall 2025. All internship candidates must provide a resume, cover letter, and be available to commit to the full term of the Internship (two semesters). With the press currently working remotely, candidates must have their own computer equipped with Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe Pro, and, if possible, Adobe Photoshop. A stable internet connection is required. We ask that interns commit to working 10–15 hours per week.
