Position Summary

The Department Coordinator for the Department of Biological Sciences serves as the primary person responsible for administrative functions in the Department. The coordinator maintains the class schedule in CMS, gathers and organizes course syllabi and textbook adoptions, processes student adds/drops, prepares departmental correspondence, and assists faculty and staff with questions and administrative support. 

In addition, the Department coordinator is responsible for tasks for the Departments of Chemistry and Geography. The incumbent serves as a liaison for space requests for all three departments, coordinating NSM-wide room utilization for BIO/CHEM/GEOG, and serving as a point person to submit work orders for classroom, office and laboratory space as well as serve as a back-up for key issue.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,058.00 per month - $4,500.00 per month 

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,058.00 per month - $ 6,653.00 per month

Department Information 

The Department of Biological Sciences at California State University, Sacramento is one of the largest programs on campus, with approximately 1,600 undergraduate and 60 Master’s students, 30 permanent faculty, approximately 45 temporary faculty, and 12 technical and administrative support team members. Most of the Department is found in the new Tschannen Science Complex, and courses cover the range of biology, including evolution, microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, ecology, and conservation biology.

Minimum Qualifications 

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite. 

These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience. 

Required Qualifications 

  1. Experience coordinating and/or performing entire clerical and administrative support functions in a complex administrative environment 
  2. Experience setting priorities, meeting deadlines, multi-tasking, and evaluating and making recommendations pertaining to operational and procedural matters 
  3. Basic knowledge of and ability to follow standard office procedures (e.g. filing, maintaining of records, answering phone and transferring of voicemail messages) 
  4. Expertise with office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat) and office equipment and the Internet 
  5. Ability to provide lead work direction, training, and guidance to student assistants or other office staff and provide input to performance evaluations, when needed.
