Job Summary:

JOB SUMMARY
Basic scientists focus on high-level scientific research and development, investigative experiments, data analysis, and formal data presentation. This position may include the expectation of necessary skills to manage the day-to-day operations of the laboratory and its personnel.

Overview. The Basic Scientist will play a role in enhancing our understanding of genomic contributions to otolaryngology-related diseases and disorders. The Basic Scientist will analyze genomic data, plan follow up studies, and provide related genomic analytic support to clinician scientists and other researchers in the department.

Design and supervise analytic pipelines for computational genetic and phenotypic data with minimal supervision

o   Plan and execute research studies with minimal supervision

o   Conduct analysis with state-of the art genomic methods such as GWAS, PheWAS, Polygenic Scoring, gene-tissue expression (computational complex trait analyses)

o   Establish protocols and pipelines for complex trait genetic data analyses and phenotypic studies

o   Supervision of data analysis projects by junior lab members

o   Supervise research assistants in carrying out data analysis

o   Mentor and train graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior research staff in programming basics and complex trait genetics data analysis methods (including GWAS and post-GWAS methods)

o   Provide other technical guidance to the team as needed

 

Data management and day-to-day lab functioning

o   Manage databases in Redcap and other high-dimensional databases; perform QC of data

o   Manage data use agreements and liaise with external academic collaborators and external databases

 

Manuscript preparation: contribute as primary author and co-author to research publications 

o   Prepare figures and tables of research results

o   Interpret findings in relation to literature

o   Write manuscripts and grant applications collaboratively with PI

o   Plan and coordinate literature review with other research personnel and organize citation databases

o   Work with research team on generating new results for grant proposals and student projects

o   Attend conferences in the field to learn new methods and present findings
