Discovery Education is looking for Studio Lab Project Lead to join our Pivot Interactives team. The role of the Studio Lab Project Lead is to create Pivot Interactive video instances that can be used in Pivot Interactives activities.
The Pivot Interactives team at Discovery Education produces interactive learning content and software for science teachers and students. Our interactive videos enable students to engage, explore, and investigate scientific phenomena deeply and authentically. We’re an enthusiastic, energetic, and creative team dedicated to revolutionizing science education.
What You Will Do
- Using input from content development team, develop Pivot Interactives video instances.
- Design apparatus and conduct experiments including researching past practice, construction, running experiments, and collecting and analyzing data.
- Capture the experimental set-up and results by employing the appropriate cameras, lens, and lighting, composing a visually engaging shot, and recording the video trials.
- Processing/editing/encoding the video for use within the platform including the use of Final Cut Pro for video editing, Postman to create JSON objects to configure Pivot Player, AWS S3 for assets.
- Daily communication about project progress.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2+ years of related experience within a science laboratory setting, and 2+ years of experience with photography and videography within a lab setting. Past experience in Pivot Interactives lab very helpful but not required.
- At least a high-school level understanding of earth science, chemistry, physics and biology.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a STEM field.
- Knowledge of basic lab practices.
- Strong understanding of experimental design, data analysis, and science reasoning.
- Formal or informal educational experience is very helpful.
- Ability to research and collect knowledge about science topics related to life science, physical science, and earth and space science.
- Mathematical and quantitative reasoning skills.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and safety checks in a lab environment.
- Ability to iterate with a R&D mindset.
- Ability to design, fabricate, and test science apparatus.
- Ability to communicate about project progress clearly and consistently.
- Creative thinker and problem solver to bring ideas from “ideal design” to interactive video.
- Knowledge and experience with end-to-end video production including the use of an array of camera set-ups, video editing, and platform specific functionality preferred. This includes standard videography, IR videography, video microscopy, high-speed videography, and UV videography.
- Can work on multiple projects at the same time independently and collaboratively, and can change priorities as required by the larger project goals.
- Technical skills including using APIs to create JSON settings files to configure Pivot Player, using command-line software such as FFMPG, using math.js to configure Pivot Player settings.
- Basic fabrication skills: using drill press, band saw, fasteners, adhesives.
- Basic knowledge of electronics: constructing simple circuits, soldering.
