Job Description

Communications & Projects Coordinator (part-time 28 hrs/wk)

In the Department of Political Science, we follow the admonition in D&C 88:79 to teach one another things which are at home, things which are abroad; the wars and the perplexities of the nations, and the judgments which are on the land; and a knowledge also of countries and of kingdoms. We need your talents, your passion, and your skills to communicate with people both internally and externally about the amazing things our students and faculty are doing. What you'll do in this position:

  • Develop and promote content in our various communications outlets, which include our department magazine, social media, website, and newsletter. Content will vary and cover items such as student achievements and activities, department events, faculty research, and notable alumni achievements.
  • Publicize department research to College and University Communications teams and news media
  • Serve on college and university communications committees
  • Serve as Executive Director of Beyond BYU, an annual two-day event that takes place in Washington, DC.. 
  • Oversee four active alumni chapters of the BYU Political Affairs Society, including advising chapter presidents and making recommendations to the department chair on leadership changes
  • Assist with department academic events, such as the Biannual LDS Young Scholars Workshop and faculty-sponsored conferences
  • Work with faculty and Research Development with grant writing and the grant submission process

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU 
  • Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong communications, writing, and editing skills
  • Self-starter
  • Ability to interact regularly with students, faculty, and alumni
  • Excellent computer and office skills

Preferred

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree and 4 years of relevant work experience
  • Political science or social science background
  • Experience with event planning
  • Familiarity with various social media tools (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, LinkedIn) and publishing software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Competency with MS Access, Qualtrics, and HTML

Pay Grade: 52

Typical Starting Pay: $30.50 to $39.75 an hour
