About the role

Supernal is at the forefront of creating emerging mobility solutions that will foster the development of human-centered cities. What we do:

The Head of Energy Storage Systems is responsible for leading the development and integration of innovative battery electric vehicle energy storage, distribution, and protection architectures and designs systems to achieve functional requirements. The role works with groundbreaking technologies including high voltage battery packs, cells and modules, power electronics and controls that integrate into battery electric vehicles meeting safety, customer requirements, and corporate objectives.

What you can do:

  • Leads multi-disciplinary team that develop safe, certifiable EVTOL energy storage, distribution & protection solutions that meet or exceed market demands
  • Assumes engineering responsibility for assigned programs
  • Architects and supports staffing of a hard-working engineering organization with experienced, yet forward-thinking team members
  • Provides leadership to a large technical staff to ensure program success
  • Prepares plans and assign projects and responsibilities to subordinates
  • Provides collaborative input about energy storage, distribution & protection considerations for the development of new and novel EVTOL aircraft
  • Guides the energy storage, distribution & protection technology development efforts and ensures they are aligned to the needs of the aircraft and business
  • Leads development of requirements and supervises validation and verification
  • Enforces the proper use of engineering criteria and standards
  • Engages with regulatory authorities to facilitate the relationships required to certify new and novel aircraft electric powertrain systems
  • Maintains effective communication with suppliers, customers, internal departments, and Distinguished Engineers concerning technical issues affecting the program
  • Facilitates opportunities for collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group companies, suppliers, and research institutions in the development of new and novel EVTOL energy storage, distribution & protection technologies
  • Identifies and reviews opportunities for developing and/or acquiring new technologies required to improve EVTOL energy storage, distribution & protection safety, reliability, performance, weight, and cost
  • Other duties as assigned

What you can contribute:

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics Engineering or applicable science degree (e.g. physics)
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in battery electric powertrain, high power & voltage applications, and/or aerospace propulsion with ten (10) years of experience in engineering leadership roles with team responsibility(an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)
  • Knowledge of battery cell specifications, module and pack design, thermal management and integration
  • Experience with electric powertrain controls, power electronics and familiarity with simulation
  • Experience with all facets of product design and certification, including conceptual design, preliminary design, detail design, prototype fabrication and assembly, bench test of complex systems, flight test, certification, entry into service, and sustainment
  • VTOL aircraft certification experience (Part 27/29) and/or fixed wing (Part 23/25) certification experience as well as familiarity with relevant standards desired
  • Ability to build relationships quickly and optimally with internal and external leaders
  • Experience working closely with multi-disciplinary teams of leaders to ensure the best quality decisions are made for the team as a whole.

  • Ability to distill high level goals and budgetary constraints into clear, concise, and actionable objectives.
