What You Will Do

Hot Section Engineering (HSE) at Pratt & Whitney is looking for a motivated, ambitious individual to join our Hot Section Durability organization in our East Hartford, CT location. The Durability Discipline is highly specialized with a particular focus on advanced cooling designs, aerodynamics, heat transfer, lifing, coatings, high-temperature aerospace materials, and manufacturing.  Durability Engineers are responsible for executing designs and thermal analyses of cooled and uncooled turbine airfoils and BOAS and performing life assessments of HPT hardware.  These analyses are necessary to support the design, development, validation, production implementation and management of advanced and operational engines flying across the globe. Engineers will support engineering tasks for various Integrated Program Deployment (IPD) phases including concept initiation and optimization, preliminary and detailed design, verification and validation, and in-service support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute designs and thermal analyses of CMC (ceramic matrix composite) hot-section hardware to drive continuous improvement in durability part metrics and tools utilizing ESW/EKS with technical oversight of senior engineer. 
  • Perform heat transfer, fluid flow, and computational fluid dynamics analyses.
  • Execute and calibrate thermal analyses and part life predictions using available test data
  • Support development of CMC technologies including concept generation and application
  • Assess manufacturing non-conformances and test engine hardware; includes hardware delivery, life predictions, test monitoring and post-test data collection.
  • Active and engaged participant in an IPT

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)
  • 2 years of experience in engineering with a bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Concentration in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics
  • Knowledge in Material Science, Statistics, Lifing and Weibull Analysis
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, such as, investment casting, laser and EDM hole drilling, airflow, metallic and ceramic coating, and ceramic matrix composite (CMC) processes.
  • Knowledge of airfoil lifing failure modes and mission life modeling for typical airfoil limiting modes such as oxidation, creep, corrosion and TMF
  • Excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills

Hot Section Engineering (HSE)

Hot Section Engineering is responsible for the design, development, technology maturation and in service support of all diffuser cases, combustors, turbines (vanes, blades, rotors and cases), augmenters (military), nozzles and associated fuel systems for all military, commercial and industrial engine models and radial auxiliary power units.
