The Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Remediation & Waste Management, is seeking to fill an Environmental Specialist IV vacancy in Augusta, Bangor, Portland, or Presque Isle. *

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position manages the activities of the Residuals Management Unit of the Division of Materials Management. This Unit is responsible for licensing, compliance, and assistance work related to composting, anaerobic digestion and septage management facilities and agronomic utilization activities. The Unit also provides project management for the Department's ongoing PFAS investigation of sludge and septage land application sites. The position directly supervises and supports seven staff, assigns duties and tasks, and oversees and reviews staff work products including licenses, inspection reports, data, and enforcement documents. The position works directly with businesses, industries, institutions, farms, and other stakeholders, particularly on complex or high-profile regulatory matters and rulemaking. The position frequently coordinates work and policy development with the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry to address issues of mutual interest to the agencies. Responsibilities also include program representation at municipal, regional, and national forums, Board of Environmental Protection proceedings and various other venues. The position collaborates with staff throughout the Department as needed to achieve Department goals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: An eight (8) year combination of education and/or experience in environmental science or related area which includes at least two (2) years of supervisory or program management/administration experience. Qualifying education must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills and experience: 

• Knowledge of agronomy, soil science, composting, and anaerobic digestion.
• Experience in administration of regulatory programs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse parties and groups.
• Experience writing reports and regulations.
• Experience in environmental assessment and remediation.
