TITLE: Police Officer 

DEPARTMENT: University Police 

REPORTS TO: VP Finance and Administration ��

CLASSIFICATION: Staff-12 months 

EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD 

STANDARD WORK HOURS: 40 hours per week 

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time 

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt  

 

JOB SUMMARY:  

 

Under minimum supervision, an essential employee responsible for enforcing local, state, and federal laws and ensures compliance with university policies.  Provides security for personnel, real property, and equipmentInvestigates and documents crimes/incidents, documents, and preserves evidence, and provides legal testimony. 

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  

 

  • Patrol university property in a vehicle, on foot, or bicycle to provide security and law enforcement.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Obtains information needed and completes collision reports, criminal reports, and criminal citations.
  • Processes evidence prepares court cases and provides legal testimony.
  • Assist Patrol Sergeant with scheduling and approving reports.
  • Train new, inexperienced police officers.
  • Perform campus patrol, victim/witness assistance, or as crime prevention officer.
  • Operates equipment such as vehicles, radar, emergency equipment, and breath alcohol analyzers.
  • May provide first aid services until medical assistance arrives.
  • Performs miscellaneous job duties as assigned.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:  

 

  • Skill in the use of first aid procedures
  • Ability to write reports containing technical information
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to complete moderately complex administrative paperwork
  • Ability to gather and organize legal evidence
  • Skill in completing collision and criminal investigations
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Skill in operating police equipment
  • Ability to provide legal depositions and testimony
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods, and university policies

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: 

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibility. 

 

  

OTHER DUTIES: 

 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  

 

  • Graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy and at least 10 years experience as a patrol officer.
  • State of Kentucky Certified Law Enforcement Officer or eligibility for certification by the waiver.
  • Possession of a valid Kentucky operator’s license.
