Job Description Summary:

Interns must be at least 16 years of age in order to work in a Whitehead Institute laboratory.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

The Intern is responsible for assisting laboratory operations and performing basic bench-level or computational experiments/ data analysis under the close supervision of tenured laboratory staff. The Intern will shadow laboratory processes, document observations, analyzes experimental data and addresses methodological problems in experimental protocols and results with supervisor.

Internships at Whitehead Institute are designed to provide hands-on experience in a dynamic research environment and to foster the development of essential laboratory and/or data analytics skills. Interns will work closely with experienced researchers and faculty members on ongoing projects, contributing to cutting-edge research in the field of biomedical science.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

• With supervision of Principal Investigator or other supervisory personnel, conducts basic bench-level experiments or computational analysis and small independent research projects.

• May operate and maintain laboratory equipment
• May prepare, order, and maintain stocks of necessary reagents, solutions and supplies.
• Documents, compiles, and assists in interpreting experimental data. Reports data to supervisor in oral and written reports.
• May be exposed to or work with BL1 materials.
• Performs analysis of experimental results by identifying methodological problems and helping to identify and implement modifications in research protocols.
• May consult scientific literature as needed.
• Other tasks as required or assigned.
• Moderate lifting required (up to 20 pounds).

QUALIFICATIONS

• Currently enrolled in a high school or undergraduate degree program.
• No prior lab experience required.
• Moderate lifting required (up to 20 pounds).
• Ability to follow directions and perform repetitive tasks.
