About the role
The Director of Nursing Education is a professional nurse with a comprehensive knowledge and skill in education in the workplace. This individual is responsible for the teaching/learning process and advancing nursing practice within the operations of the Nursing Department and the Hospital.
Serves as an advisor to the CNO and Nursing Leadership for the promotion of new learning and insure competency assessment at all levels for the advancement of professional nursing and quality patient care.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Clinical Leadership
- Formulates, interprets and implements the philosophy, mission, vision, values, policies, and standards for nursing care through the implementation of educational operations based on evidence based practice.
- Coordinates Clinical Specialty and Departmental requirements related to credentialing of nursing staff and advanced practice nurses in collaboration with the Senior Director of APN according to the Joint Commission and CMS standards for Human Resources and Medical Staff
- Provides leadership for design and implementation of high level of staff professional development which includes: orientation, ongoing staff education, implementation of a new graduate residency program/student nurse internship program, development of leadership and managerial skills, as well as coordination of nursing student experiences in the Nursing Department.
- Collaborates with the Senior DON Advanced Practice (APN) ensure data supports the credentialing of advanced practice nurses that meets standards set by the Nursing Executive Committee and the Medical Board.
- Collaborates with the Clinical Directors and nursing staff to promote a spirit of inquiry and to develop evidence based standards/studies for the investigation of best practices to promote performance improvement based on data and outcomes.
- Leads educational efforts for the promotion of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing and the Patient Experience HCAHPS/Press Ganey reinforcing staff knowledge and skills.
- Leads and participates in core department redesign and improvement activities to support the CNO and Nursing Leadership and Clinical Services in advancing clinical practice of patient care and to assure adequate resources are identified for professional development, in alignment with the Lean Daily Improvement methodology inclusive of the Daily Management Boards enacted in all care delivery areas
- Leads the development of professional practice and innovative educational criteria/processes for establishing standards of patient care and the performance of competent nursing practice in collaboration with nursing quality and magnet criteria.
- Co-Chair designee for the Nursing Executive Committee in collaboration with the Director of Professional Practice and the CNO.
- Leads site committee structures/related activities to support the Professional Practice Model and the Care Delivery Model through Nursing Professional Practice and Informatics Committees, Quality Improvement, Peer Review, Nursing Documentation and Nursing Research Committees.
- Assumes a leadership role in the MSHS Professional Development Council to insure effective and efficient approaches to orientation, on-site learning, competency assessment and liaison with the Phillips School of Nursing of Mount Sinai.
- Assumes a leadership role within the redesigation efforts of the Magnet Designation within the criteria of Professional Development and Structural Empowerment.
- Ensures the development of interdisciplinary team approaches to educational and process improvement activities and evaluates the impact on clinical outcomes, RN engagement, and the patient experience.
- Facilitates the utilization of evidence and research findings in the teaching-learning process for the delivery of safe and quality nursing care.
- Participates in and assumes leadership roles in health system and professional nursing initiatives and provides opportunities for staff participation.
- Assumes a leadership role in medical center interdepartmental and medical board committees as well as nursing committees.
Administration
- Participates with Hospital and System nursing executive and other departmental leaders in the in hospital decision-making structures and processes.
- Ensures an appropriate staffing plan is implemented within Nursing Education and oversees all functions are effectively and efficiently meeting the goals of Nursing Education and the Nursing Department.
