The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization. 

The Strategic Research Awards team is looking for a part-time Research & Grants Program Intern interested in gaining administrative and technical support services experience in the AHA research awards process and day-to-day management services for investigators and their institutional grants and fiscal officers.  The selected candidate will conduct data quality reviews for the team and assist customers in understanding and interpreting AHA policies and procedures to ensure compliance on awards.

Individuals will obtain practical experience and receive hands-on training in awards management. In this position, you will work closely with the Strategic Research Awards team to support the overall management of the strategic network awards (e.g., Strategically Focused Research Networks, Health Equity Research Networks, etc.,).

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 1/21/25-5/2/25
  • Location: Remote
  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

Awards Management: 

  • Monitors awards for compliance with AHA policies and procedures.
  • Provides support of active awards, change requests, and related inquiries.
  • Reviews annual financial reports for compliance with policies.
  • Monitors annual scientific report submissions and assign reviewer critiques as needed.
  • Manages/organizes record retention of award agreements and payment information and supports strategic award team with award payments.
  • Provides information to all customer groups (awardees, institutional personnel, and sponsors).
  • Supports team with applicant pre-award and awardee post-award questions.
  • Supports managing meeting logistics and follow-up with reimbursements for semi-annual meetings.

Special Projects: 

  • Conducts data quality reviews to ensure the accuracy of information and payments for transferring and terminating awards, and documents findings to management.
  • Assists management with special projects as needed/assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Seniors and graduate students pursuing a degree in public health, health sciences, biology, or other science-related fields are encouraged to apply.
  • 1 year of experience in research or grants administration with a funding organization or academic institution.
  • Experience managing projects preferred.
  • Experience working with volunteers, particularly science volunteers. 
  • Strong customer service and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate information accurately and effectively to diverse audiences.  
  • Experience working with databases and electronic reporting tools.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills (Word, Pwr. Point, Excel.).
  • Excel
