About the role

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) to lead and manage safety initiatives on federal and commercial construction projects. The SSHO will be responsible for implementing and enforcing site safety programs, ensuring OSHA and EM 385-1-1 compliance, and fostering a culture of workplace safety. This role requires hands-on field experience, strong leadership skills, and the ability to mitigate potential jobsite work hazards proactively.

Key Responsibilities

1. Site Safety Management

  • Conduct daily site inspections to identify and correct safety hazards.
  • Serve as the primary safety officer for the job site, ensuring full compliance with OSHA, EM 385, and project-specific safety standards.
  • Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions for employees and subcontractors.
  • Maintain and enforce Accident Prevention Plans, Site Safety and Health Plans, and Emergency Action Plans.
  • Monitor subcontractors' safety performance and ensure all personnel adhere to site safety requirements.

2. Compliance & Reporting

  • Prepare and submit detailed daily safety reports with observations, corrective actions, and compliance records.
  • Investigate and document all incidents, near misses, and injuries, ensuring timely reporting and corrective actions.
  • Maintain and update Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and other safety documentation.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager, Superintendent, and Quality Control Manager to integrate safety into all project operations.

3. Training & Emergency Preparedness

  • Develop and lead emergency response drills to prepare for workplace incidents.
  • Conducted new-hired safety orientations and ensured all personnel were trained on safety protocols.
  • Ensure all employees use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently.
  • Stay updated on federal, state, and local safety regulations and ensure company-wide compliance.

Requirements

Candidate Requirements

1. Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in commercial/industrial construction project management.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification at least 5 years ago (Required).
  • OSHA 500 or OSHA 510 (Preferred).
  • Experience with USACE EM 385 regulations for government projects.
  • Specialized formal training in high-hazard trades (electrical, crane/derrick, roofing, etc)
  • First Aid/CPR Certification (Required).
  • Trench Safety certification.

2. Technical & Software Skills

  • Experience using Procore or other construction safety management software (Preferred).
  • Proficient with computers and MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).

3. Industry Knowledge & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of construction methods, hazard identification, and risk mitigation.
  • Experience conducting inspections and enforcing compliance with federal and local safety regulations.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving abilities, capable of managing complex projects with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage and coordinate multiple project stakeholders.

Strong Candidate Preferences

  • CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional) certification.
  • Federal government project experience, including VA hospitals and Army Corps of Engineers projects.
  • Knowledge of environmental safety regulations and industrial hygiene.
  • OSHA 30 recertification (within the last five years) or ability to recertify.
  • Experience with VA Hospital contracting, including VA safety protocols and compliance standards.
  • Private sector project experience.
