Job Description:
Must be able to reside in assigned area and this Deputy will be assigned a state vehicle (chosen by the agency) to perform duties. Deputy must maintain vehicle as per state policy. Uniforms will also be assigned. Class A and B uniforms will be issued after a successful nine-month probationary period. This position is under the State Law Enforcement Bargaining Council (SLEBC) contract.
Job duties: Conduct fire and life safety code inspections of new and existing buildings, liquor establishment fire/life safety code inspections, DHHS referral inspections for daycares, hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facility inspections, and will be the State Fire Marshal Agency primary liaison with local fire departments and fire prevention personnel in the area. Must write and submit complete, prompt and accurate reports regarding all inspections and investigations to ensure proper records are maintained using the software systems for the respective reports. Enforce life safety codes and promote fire safety in various facilities and premises. Perform Federal Health Surveys at Hospitals, Nursing Homes and other Heath Care facilities. Also “other duties” as they arise or are assigned, including (but not limited to) public education events, “special duties” such as state fair or fire school, etc.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Training or experience in fire service, fire science, building construction, code enforcement, regulation enforcement, engineering or architecture AND a valid driver’s license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation. Some positions in this class may require law enforcement certification.
Preferred Qualifications: Fire service background, Inspections background, fire science degree, building construction work or knowledge.
Other: This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver’s license or another form of reliable transportation. Regular and reliable attendance is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must be personable and able to get along well with peers and the public. High School diploma or GED required. Background in the Fire Service and or with building construction knowledge is beneficial.
