ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT:               TheWest Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

 

LOCATION:                                       Romney, West Virginia

 

Direct supervision of residential program employees in assigned area during evening and night shifts. Responsible for the quality of residential student services provided.  Assures that age/disability appropriate recreational opportunities occur on a daily basis. Coordinates opportunities for extended student educational experiences, such as field trips.  Committed to upholding and protecting children's rights to a high standard of care in the residential program at WVSDB.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will adhere to WVDE Policy 5902 – Employee Code of Conduct and WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance. 

  • At all times, demonstrate commitment to the quality of the residential program as a foundational component of the WVSDB experience.
  • Ensures that RCS staff incorporate their knowledge of developmental needs of each student in planning for his or her residential experiences.
  • Respects the rights of parents to speak privately with their children on the phone or in person, unless extenuating circumstances are present.
  • Contributes proactively and collaboratively to the continuum of WVSDB's educational and residential services by providing direct supervision to all Residential Care Specialists while on duty.
  • At all times, ensure that RCS staff demonstrate the initiative to extend the students' educational and social experiences in appropriate ways.
  • Collaborates with residential and instructional staff to deliver instructional opportunities to students in the residential program while also providing for their general care, safety, and welfare.
  • Responsible for the overall quality of residential student services provided during assigned shift.
  • Assures that RCS staff carry out age/disability appropriate recreational opportunities occur on a daily basis.
  • Coordinates opportunities for extended student educational experiences, for example off campus excursions.
  • Promotes student self-advocacy and independent living skills.                 
  • Assists with the implementation and evaluation of individualized education programs (IEPs) in areas such as independent living for each student as the IEP goals relate to the residential program.
  • Implements special programs, such as behavior modification, as required.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership.
  • Maintains appropriate student/staff records and protects their confidentiality.
  • Provides emotional support for students and be cognizant of any mood or behavioral changes in students and promptly refer such changes to supervisor.  Implement positive behavior support techniques to foster desired responses.
  • Administers and charts medication prescribed by the child's physician or the school's physician.  Accepts and acts upon responsibility for keeping medications secure and out of student access areas if nurse is unavailable.
  • Works in any of the existing dormitory units, with any age group or gender throughout the year, as assigned.  Residential Shift Supervisors may be placed on a rotating, floating, or stable shift assignment.  Shift schedule/start time may be altered from time to time throughout the year at the discretion of the Director of Student Life as dictated by the needs of the students.
  • Reviews all policies and procedures applicable to the Residential Program on an annual basis.  Training will be scheduled and documented by immediate supervisor.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Education or related field required;
    • Successful candidate will sign a letter of intent agreeing to complete 18 credit hours of RCS Technical Core Courses relevant to the WVSDB residential program staff within 2 years of hire;
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate;
  • A minimum of three years of full-time supervisory experience in a residential care or childca
