The Institute for Macroeconomics and Policy Analysis, part of the Department of Economics in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University, invites applications for a full-time, 12-month position at the rank of Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Assistant Professor. Applicants should have a PhD or anticipate PhD completion by August 2025. The appointment will commence on or before September 1, 2025. This is a non-tenure-track position. There is no teaching associated with this position.
The successful candidate will have experience in state-of-the-art macroeconomic modeling, coding models, and analyzing data. Knowledge of current debates in U.S. fiscal policy is a bonus. The candidate will be an integral member of the IMPA team, engaging in computational modeling, coding, and analyzing data throughout the year.
The principal duties to be carried out in collaboration with other IMPA team members include:
- Developing and extending the IMPA model code base. Specifically:
- Using state-of-the-art numerical techniques to build and solve heterogeneous agent macroeconomic models (particularly sequence-space jacobian methods and related extensions);
- Coding in Julia (or excellence in any other general programming language like Python or C++);
- Using a Git/Github based workflow; and
- Using continuous integration (merging - testing - deployment) and documenting a large code base.
- Performing data analysis. Specifically:
- Coding in R and/or Stata
- Contributing to academic research papers, policy papers, and technical notes
- Assigning and supervising tasks to IMPA’s student research assistants
The annual salary ranges are as follows: Postdoctoral Fellow $90,000-100,000; Research Assistant Professor $100,000-110,000.
