Academic Professional Track (Non-Tenure) : Instructional Associate Professor or Instructional Professor and Associate Dean of EnMed Education

The School of Engineering Medicine (SEM) at Texas A&M University seeks a full-time, 11-month non-tenure Instructional Associate Professor or Instructional Professor to serve as Associate Dean of EnMed Education, starting the Summer of 2025 in Houston, TX. SEM leads in translational medicine and houses the EnMed program, a unique MD/MEng degree completed in four years. The Associate Dean will drive SEM’s educational and research goals through innovation and collaboration. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Medical Education, this role works closely with leadership across SEM and EnMed.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Curriculum Development

• Provide strategic direction for the engineering medicine (EnMed) program, ensuring excellence in teaching, learning, and student outcomes.
• Provide supervision and mentorship to phase level assistant deans and director(s).
• Work with the curriculum committee to oversee the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the engineering medicine curriculum.
• Lead efforts to integrate innovative teaching methodologies, including competency-based education, simulation, and technology-enhanced learning.
• Ensure compliance with accreditation standards (e.g., LCME) and coordinate self-study processes for assigned standards.
• Facilitates the integration of basic and clinical sciences across all phases of instruction to ensure both vertical and horizontal integration of the curriculum.
• Collaborate with Senior Associate Dean for Research and Engineering Education to optimize opportunities for blending the engineering and medicine curriculum towards the SEM’s mission to training physicianeers.
• Manage the budget of the Office of EnMed Education.
• Provide reports to the Dean, as requested, to include, but not limited to, those needed for program evaluation and accreditation, monitoring and evaluation of programs/services, addressing success in meeting learning outcomes, and participate in generating the institutional outcomes.

Student Support & Student Affairs

• Work with student affairs to enhance advising, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
• Work with student affairs to support student success and outcomes.
• Address student concerns related to the educational program and collaborate with leadership on policy matters.
• Oversee the development and implementation of academic policies and procedures.

Assessment & Evaluation

• Oversee assessment strategies for student learning and program effectiveness.
• Work with the Assistant Dean of Evaluation and Assessment to ensure robust processes for evaluation of courses, clerkships, and programmatic outcomes.
• Use data analytics to inform curriculum decisions and enhance educational outcomes.

Interprofessional & External Collaboration

• Foster interprofessional education initiatives with other health professions schools.
• Representing the medical school in national and regional education networks and organizations.
• Engage in partnerships with clinical sites to enhance medical education in the clinical years.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications & Experience:

• MD, DO, PhD, EdD, or equivalent degree in a relevant field.
• Minimum of five years of experience in educational leadership.
• Demonstrated expertise in curriculum development and accreditation.
• Strong understanding of competency-based medical education and assessment methodologies.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience with medical programmatic accreditation by the LCME or equivalent accrediting body.

Preferred Qualifications:

• MD or DO with a minimum of 5 years of experience providing patient health care.
• Educational leadership experience in a medical school.
• Experience with interprofessional education and collaboration with other health professions schools is highly desirable.
• Experience with educational technology, simulation, and innovative teaching strategies.
• Experience with student-centered active-learning methodologies is also highly desirable. For example, the pedagogy within SEM is a flipped-classroom model that also emphasizes team-based learning and self-directed learning.
