Year-Round Tax Legal Intern

This year-round position (“Tax Legal Intern”) works with the Tax Counsel group in the Tax Department and requires a weekly work hour commitment of approximately 15 hours per week, but there is flexibility around exams and other school responsibilities.
The Tax Counsel group has responsibility for providing direction and advice on all aspects of the Company and its subsidiaries’ operations with respect to known, potential, or possible tax effects, including novel and/or non-recurring situations and monitoring proposed legislation, which impact the Company in federal, state, local, and foreign taxation in substantive areas including, but not limited to, tax planning, acquisitions, litigation, employee benefits, state and local tax matters, foreign tax matters, tax credit investing, and economic and tax incentives (“Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas”). Tax Legal Intern’s primary function is to support the Tax Counsel group and the Director of Tax Counsel in providing the highest level of advice, strategy, and competence to the Company regarding the Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas.
Because this role involves access to confidential financial information, the Company has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and to provide similar protections for its clients and potential investments.
Conducting legal research in all Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas. Excellent legal research skills and writing ability are required. Tax Legal Intern will conduct research at the direction of the Director of Tax Counsel or other members of the Tax Counsel group.
Participating in projects in any of the Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas. Tax Legal Intern will work closely on such projects with other members of the Tax Legal group but will be responsible for independently completing assigned tasks based on overall guidelines and direction without extensive supervision. Tax Legal Intern will have access to confidential information and is expected to maintain the confidentiality of such information.
Building and maintaining working knowledge of taxation in general and specifically in-depth knowledge of Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas in which they will gain project experience. This in-depth knowledge should be built and maintained by reading tax cases, rulings, legislation, and secondary sources such as tax articles.
Assisting with documenting policies, processes, and procedures of the Tax Counsel group in various Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas.
Building and maintaining working knowledge of the Company’s business operations in general, as well as specific knowledge of operational matters specifically related to the Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas in which they will gain project experience.
Working with and building relationships with Tax Department personnel outside of the Tax Counsel group, as well as Company personnel outside the Tax Department and external advisors, on projects in the Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas.
Minimum Requirements:
- Candidates must be continuing to actively pursue a Juris Doctorate degree at an accredited law school.
- Candidates must have completed a Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum GPA 3.0.
- Microsoft Office 365, especially Word and Excel
Online tax research (Lexis, Checkpoint, or Bloomberg experience preferred)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Legal research and writing experience.
- Hardworking team player, detail oriented, organized, outgoing personality and strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Prior public accounting, law firm, or corporate internship experience
