Oak Ridge National LaboratoryAbout the role
Requisition Id 15446
Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to produce high quality engineering design packages for components and subsystems. The position resides in the Design Services group within the Second Target Station (STS) Project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of the Design Services group, you will have the opportunity to engage in the design of complex, integrated mechanical systems, many of which are first-of-a-kind or one-of-a-kind. In this role, you will work alongside other designers, engineers, and scientists to fully develop these components and subsystem designs. You will be responsible for developing component and subsystem designs and detailed fabrication drawings. You will support the engineer responsible in preparing technical specifications and other procurement-related documents. In addition to producing your own design packages, a Senior Mechanical Designer will be responsible for reviewing and checking the work of peer designers.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Take complex engineering designs from conception through manufacture and build.
- Successfully communicate and collaborate with engineers and scientists throughout the design process.
- Create engineering models and drawings using Creo/Windchill.
- Prepare clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough, or detailed sketches and from written or verbal instructions.
- Perform tolerance stack ups to assure proper fit in assemblies.
- Integrate the work of supporting team members into top-level models using appropriate top-down assembly methods.
- Check detail drawings of peer designers to assure compliance with engineering codes and drafting standards.
- Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications:
- AS degree in an engineering discipline with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and design experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- At least 3 years using Creo and Windchill.
- Experience working with Creo skeletons and top-down design.
- Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards.
- Expert knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Ability to effectively communicate design concepts to engineers and other designers.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Design for manufacturing experience.
- Experience working in an accelerator or nuclear environment.
- Experience working in a team environment with other designers on large assemblies comprised of thousands of parts and sub-assemblies.
- Experience in weldment design and American Welding Society (AWS) symbology.
- Experience in communicating with vendors and fabricators.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
- For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
- Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
