Job Description
We have an opening for a Scientific Technologist in Environment, Safety & Health’s Technical Services Department. In this role, you will provide general technical support and solve moderately complex technical problems for respiratory protection and industrial hygiene instruments and equipment.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
You will
- Operate, maintain, inspect, and functionally test respiratory protection and industrial hygiene instruments and equipment, providing feedback to improve procedures and equipment reliability.
- Provide in-person respirator fit testing and practical training on donning, doffing, inspection, use, limitations, cleaning, storage, and emergency procedures. Evaluate user knowledge and proficiency, identify fit-testing deficiencies, and recommend corrective actions.
- Follow technical work instructions, written policies, and approved procedures while performing respiratory protection and industrial hygiene activities in laboratory and field environments.
- Maintain working knowledge of approved respiratory protection equipment and industrial hygiene instruments to provide knowledgeable customer service and technical assistance to LLNL employees.
- Procure respiratory protection supplies and equipment while following strict QA/QC guidelines and inventory-control requirements.
- Track, manage, and monitor equipment, supplies, inspection status, and inventory through inventory-management databases.
- Record, review, and report training, fit-testing, equipment, and industrial hygiene data. Identify strengths, deficiencies, and corrective actions related to testing data, equipment condition, user performance, and program implementation.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 502.3 level
- Maintain regular communication with technical personnel across programs, facilities, and divisions, with occasional coordination with external organizations.
- Perform Grade D breathing-air quality sampling from compressed breathing-air systems, where errors may have moderate programmatic and significant safety consequences.
- Operate mechanical, vacuum, and instrumentation systems on a regular basis.
- Assume technical authority and associated responsibilities when delegated.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Associate degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or a related ES&H field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Demonstrated technical knowledge of respiratory protection equipment, including respirators, SCBA units, supplied-air systems, and fit-testing instruments.
- Knowledge of pressurized systems and their application in a health and safety environment.
- Knowledge of ES&H regulations, respiratory protection practices, and QA/QC requirements.
- Ability to interpret technical procedures, analyze test results, maintain accurate records, and work independently or as part of a team.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills when working with professional, technical, and operational personnel.
- Ability to perform frequent bending and stooping, apply forceful gripping or pressing with the hands and arms, and carry equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
Additional qualifications at the 502.3 level
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or a related environment, safety, and health field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Experience using respiratory protection equipment and/or delivering in-person training on its proper use.
- Experience operating and/or calibrating industrial hygiene instrumentation.
