A day in the life:
Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment and tools to maintain, repair, reconstruct and strengthen bridges, box culverts and other structures.
Operate electrically controlled drawbridges, traffic gates and barriers.
Maintain operation of all electrical controls that activate sirens, flashing traffic lights, barriers and gates.
Check all electrical and mechanical devices and components and fix issues.
Maintain, repair and grease machinery, electronics, motors, gears, rollers, hinges, cables, sheaves and other mechanical parts for drawbridge operation.
Construct and place rigging and scaffolding for fixed, hanging, swing and traveling scaffolding.
Perform visual inspection of structures for repairs.
Assist with weather related emergencies and operate snowplows, deicer trucks and other equipment to clear snow from roadways.
Exposure to noise, extreme heights up to 400 feet, depths of 20 feet, all weather conditions, heavy equipment, pesticides and hazardous waste materials is expected.
Must be able to move around rough terrain, bend and stoop for extended periods and may need to lift up to 90 pounds.
May need to be available after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency, on call and weather related purposes and may be required to travel overnight.
