The Mount Sinai Health System, through its affiliation with New York City Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst is seeking a full-time Physician Assistant for its Peri-Operative Services. Elmhurst Hospital Center is a 545-bed tertiary care facility and an ACS-verified level 1 trauma center in the ethnically diverse borough of Queens, NY.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as a full time, flexible schedule (3 or 4 days per week, day and night shifts/ overnight) Peri-operative Physician Assistant (PA) in the Department of Surgery. The successful candidate will be responsible for pre-operative evaluation and preparation of patients for surgery. The position entails working with multiple surgical specialties (Otolaryngology, Urology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery) to facilitate and expedite surgical procedures at the time of surgical scheduling as well as on the day of surgery. In addition, the PA will be trained to provide bedside assistance in the operating room with the DaVinci surgical robotic system. They will operate with multiple specialties including General Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Urology and Gynecology.
The position entails performing a broad spectrum of care regarding critical thinking, diagnosis, ordering of medications, and performance of corrective, preventive and therapeutic measures in the inpatient and outpatient surgical setting.
- Receive hand off from the Surgical team at shift start.
- Write H&P for all new admissions
- Provide care of patients in post-operative setting, including post-operative assessments and management
- Answer floor emergencies, including fever work-up, hypoxia, arrhythmia, chest pain, etc.
- Facilitate transfer of critical patients to radiology/ OR, as needed.
- Attend to consultations within the hospital including in the emergency department and the inpatient wards.
- Suturing of complex lacerations and attending to hand and facial injuries; placing/managing Foley catheters
- Update team list for A.M. rounds.
- Hand off to oncoming team in A.M.
- Assess patients for surgery and complete documentation as needed for all new patients presenting for surgery, or being scheduled for surgery in future
- Obtain consents for procedures
- Provide care of patients in post-operative setting, including post-operative assessments and management
- Assist with scheduling of procedures
- Bedside assist in the operating room with the DaVinci surgical robotic system, including placing trocars, closing fascia and skin, and replacing robotic instruments as needed during surgery.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Completion of NYS approved program for training of physician assistants to acquire knowledge of anatomy, physiology and clinical patient care, usually via Bachelor of Science program/degree in closely related field.
- Certain education/training may be accepted by NYS in lieu of these requirements (nurse, etc.).
- High level of analytical ability required to effectively and expeditiously diagnose and treat medical/surgical problems under the direction of a physician.
- High degree of responsibility required for daily contacts with patients and their families.
- Registration required with New York State as Physician Assistant.
- Certification with National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (or equivalent organization) is mandatory.
- Certification in American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS).
