Maintenance Mechanic

Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing a variety of skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of various campus facility equipment.

Responsibilities 

1. Maintain, repair, replace, inspect, calibrate, install and troubleshoot facility equipment components such as fans, motors, pumps, compressors, steam equipment, piping, belts, motors, coils, fans, window, doors, air compressors, bearings, partitions, visual display surfaces, moveable chalkboards, cubicles, curtains and signage
2. Perform tasks and aid in other trades areas.
3. Perform equipment cleaning and painting; apply protective coatings and materials on equipment as required.
4. Perform plate and pipe welding
5. Respond to emergency call outs which may occur during off shift hours.
6. Read and work from blueprints, sketches, schematic diagrams, and technical manuals.
7. Work from general assignment and proceed with a minimum of supervision or direction from others
8. Operate pickup trucks, vans, and other light-duty vehicles when required.
9. Lead and direct activities of Trades helpers and other assistants as assigned.
10. Assist in basic training programs for building maintenance staff and custodians.
11. Responsible for inventory, operation, and maintenance of related shop equipment
12. Work with manufacturers and equipment vendor service personnel.
13. Perform general shop duties or other duties as assigned. Be responsible for housekeeping, sanitation, and safety in assigned Trades break, storage, shop, and work areas.
14. Follow all University safety policies and procedures while performing duties including the use of hot work permits and confined space entry procedures.
15. Complete prescribed safety classes and training and attend additional training classes as assigned. Continually work toward increasing knowledge and skills relative to field of work.
16. Prepare cost estimates, layout sketches, material selection and schedules for various projects as assigned. Coordinate and/or lead as assigned the efforts of other trades in projects involving multiple trades, solicit input in project estimates, layout and material selection from other trades and planning and engineering
17. Contribute to a safe working environment by following safe work procedures, wearing assigned PPE, actively participating in safety training and development of safe work procedures.
18. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
19. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
20. Report all safety-related concerns to supervisor.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

• High School diploma or equivalent post-secondary certificate.
• Graduate of a trades school program in Industrial Maintenance Technology OR Climate Control Technology OR an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
• Must possess or demonstrate the ability to obtain a Certified Welding certificate within 180 calendar days of hire
• Valid driver’s license.

Required Experience

• Four years of current experience in maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting commercial or industrial facility equipment.
• Demonstrated experience with rebuilding or repairing commercial or industrial facility equipment such as: pumps, valves, actuators, fans, bearings, belts, coils, compressors and various pipe types

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Graduate of trades school program in Industrial Maintenance Technology or Climate Control Technology combined with 6 years of experience.
• Training and coursework in air conditioning and refrigeration, blueprint reading, CAD, industrial piping, piping systems, pneumatic and electronic controls, steam systems and welding.
• Licensed boiler operator/installer, licensed journeyman plumber, licensed journeyman electrician, boiler and pressure vessel welding
• EPA 608 Refrigerant Recycling and Recovery Certification.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Demonstrated knowledge of safe maintenance procedures applicable to the trade
• Knowledge and ability to properly troubleshoot, maintain and repair commercial and industrial building facility equipment
• Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, temperature control diagrams, operating and maintenance instructions, plans and manuals.
