Occ Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care s upport partner with theRegistered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical N urse (LPN) and performswork as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provid esdirect care topatients and assists with non-direct patient care unit c oordination. Theindividual in this position is expected to perform basic care andcomfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient popu lationneeds in the assigned work area. In addition, the NA is expected t oassist the RN/LPN in the care of acutely ill patients. This individuali sexpected to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacyof every patient and family, and to respect cultural differences duringpati ent care. They are expected to know and adhere to all basic policiesandp rocedures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.They are expected to maintain the patient/family environment, performgeneral uni t upkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and ordersupplies as needed , with or without direct supervision. The NA isexpected to use accuratev erbal and written communication and todocument patient care appropriatel y in the electronic health record.
Work Performed
Pre pare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures andprovide manual assistance as required.Obtain and record patient data for medica l records noting and informingRN/LPN of information collected.Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients including,but notlimited to, feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nailcare, bed-m aking, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, andbowel and bladde r elimination; provide such additional care as requiredto meet the perso nal needs and comfort of assigned patients.Participate in teaching activ ities by reinforcing teaching instructed byRN and/or providers as needed .Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by helpingpositi on patients, changing non-sterile dressing and weighing patients.Takeand recordvital signs, record I&O, and apply ice bags. Note andreportany c hanges in patient's condition. Turn and position patients,set up and fee d patients as necessary, provide patients with freshdrinking water.Perfo rm fingersticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriatetraining, doc ument and notify RN/LPN.Assist with admission, discharge, and transporta tion of patients. Followstandard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests on pat ient specimens. Cleanassigned area; stock and replenish supplies and equ ipment as required.Participate in own professional development by mainta ining requiredskills validation and attending educational offerings. Sup port thedevelopment of other staff and formal learners.May also perform clean dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old.Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.
Knowledge,Skill s and Abilities
Working knowledge of procedures and techniques in volved in administeringroutine and special treatments to patients.Workin g knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health andsafety p recautions applicable to work in a hospital.Working knowledge of the org anization and physical layout of thehospital.Working knowledge ofinfecti on control procedures and safetyprecautions.Ability to withstandprolonge d standing and walking.This position is very active and requiresstanding , walking, bending,kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling andclimbing a ll day. Theemployee must frequently lift or move objects and patients we ighing over35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment.Abili ty to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to doc ument and communicatepertinent information using computerand/or paperdo cumentation tools.Ability to establish and maintain effectiveworking rel ationships withpatients and hospital staff.W
