About the role

Coordinates and performs delegated legal work under the direction and supervision of one or more licensed attorneys, which, in the absence of the Paralegal may be performed by an attorney; with minimal supervision, prepares various documents, papers and correspondence; and provides legal administrative support to the Office of the General Counsel (OGC).

Leads detailed, complex and/or large-scale legal research projects independently, and compiles and analyzes data from reference materials and various resources including Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw, State and Federal courts and other online sources; provides guidance and support to attorneys based on research findings

Analyzes, independently drafts, and provides feedback on various types of legal documents for attorney review, ensuring they are legally compliant and legally sound

Collects, compiles, and utilizes technical information to make independent decisions, as delegated, or recommendations to supervising attorney(s)

Solves general matters and complex problems that have an impact on OGC operations and the business as a whole; identifies, assesses, and evaluates risk under minimal supervision of an attorney; analyzes legislation in various states to determine potential impact on the company and its various lines of business

Performs one or more of the following: prepares and updates company license applications and regulatory filings; prepares, updates, and maintains documents for subsidiary corporations; prepares and files regulatory reports and responses to agencies requesting information; prepares and files insurance policies with state regulators and drafts responses to regulators’ requests for modifications; communicates and corresponds directly with Department of Insurance Examiners pertaining to license renewals, filing objections and other requests

Maintains collaborative relationships with internal and external business partners and outside counsel by managing expectations and deadlines; possesses detailed working knowledge of line of business/business partner/pillar operations and company operations; effectively conducts meetings and presentations for key stakeholders, business partners and within the OGC

Acts as a Subject Matter Expert to other departments and lines of business on issues related to insurance regulations, corporate issues, commercial and/or intellectual property issues, and other guidance

Leads and manages legal operations projects to achieve both department and line of business milestones and objectives; provides mentorship and training to other colleagues

Job Specifications

Typically has the following skills or abilities:


Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience; Paralegal Certification or equivalent under state-specific requirements

6+ years of law firm or in-house experience maintaining corporate licensing, regulatory compliance, commercial contracts and/or other relevant expertise

Information gathering, analytical and problem-solving skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with legal and nonlegal professionals

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, ability to manage documents, deadlines and to multitask

Proficient with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams applications

Ability to regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of the job duties

Must be self-motivated and capable of regulating workflow in a remote environment with limited supervision

Preferred Skills

Senior retail leasing paralegal

Experience working with a retail legal leasing team; negotiating lease renewal amendments on behalf of either landlord or tenant and other collateral documents (estoppels, SNDAs, rent commencement certificates, various lease memoranda, lease assignments, landlord consents)

Experience with second chairing new lease documentation negotiations (e.g. conforming lease preparation, assisting attorneys with review or preparation of revisions or exhibits, including site plans, signage, prohibited use exhibits and restrictions)

Background in analyzing key retail provisions such as: Co-Tenancies, Exclusives, Radius Restriction, Percentage Rent, Go Dark

Ability to work in fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple projects effectively and in a professional manner

Ability to interact directly with clients and communicate with landlords and lenders on assorted matters and documents, including operational concerns and defaults
