Job Summary

The laboratory of Dr. Jason Roh, in the Massachusetts General Hospital Cardiovascular Research Center (MGH CVRC), is seeking a full-time Research Technician I for basic molecular biology methods and small animal work. The laboratory investigates models of aging and heart disease, and how they are affected by genetic, pharmacological, and physiological (exercise, pregnancy) interventions. The selected candidate will join an extraordinary group of talented and motivated basic and clinician scientists whose work has direct translational applications and is linked to potential novel therapeutics.
Major job duties include basic molecular biology techniques involving cell culture, RNA and protein quantification (qPCR and Western analysis), DNA subcloning (expression plasmid construction and mutagenesis), viral vector construction, immunohistochemistry and histological staining, assays of enzyme activity, data collection and analysis (datasets involving RNA sequencing, protein expression, post-translational modifications), and small animal work (maintaining mouse colonies, genotyping, pharmacological and surgical interventions, echocardiography, exercise testing).
The candidate will be expected to keep his/her work and data collection highly organized. As s/he gains more familiarity with the projects, s/he will be expected to present data and progress reports at lab meetings and research conferences.
The candidate will also be expected to help in the joint upkeep of the lab, as all lab members are assigned one or two lab jobs. The candidate will NOT be expected to do any type of custodial service, such as washing glassware or making stock reagents for general lab use.

 

Qualifications

The candidate should have a strong academic record and be very reliable and excited to learn as this position offers a phenomenal educational opportunity. They must be highly motivated to learn about cardiac physiology and the powerful genetic, biochemical, animal models, and high throughput “-omic” strategies used to better understand how we address cardiac illness and areas of therapeutic intervention. S/he must be eager to read primary literature related to the basic science of cardiac health and disease. The candidate should have excellent judgment and skills in time management, manipulating biologic reagents and equipment, data collection and organization, and thoughtful short- and long-term planning of experiments.

Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a basic science discipline. Prior experience doing lab work such as tissue culture (e.g., during a college summer internship) is highly desirable. Experience in Biostatistical data analysis is preferred but not required.
