About the role

Lead or Senior FPGA Design Engineer

Company:

The Boeing Company

We are seeking a Lead or Senior Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) Design Engineer to join our team in Huntington Beach, California with experience in the development of mission systems for space and airborne platforms to support and lead development of next generation electronics for optical sensing systems from conceptual design through operation prototypes on multiple programs.

The person selected for this role will be expected to design and simulate algorithm performance and then convert the algorithms into hardware systems for test and verification. Specifically targeted technical skills include digital signals processing for sensing applications; embedded software development; algorithm design and simulation; FPGA implementation with VHDL and/or Verilog; and familiarity with MATLAB and Simulink.

This position is part of the rapidly growing Electro-Optical (EO) / Infra-Red (IR) Mission Systems team within BR&T. The EO/IR Mission Systems (EMS) team has more than quadrupled in size over the past 18 months due to new contract wins and continues to see increased demand from Boeing’s customers. We’re designing, building, and testing cutting edge sensor systems for airborne and space platforms. Our focus is always on the mission – connecting people through safer air travel and protection of the warfighter from its adversaries. This isn’t your typical Boeing team – we are focused on the entire lifecycle of design: from modeling and simulation of new ideas, through prototype demonstrations, and eventually transitioning to production systems.

Our team provides complete engineering solutions to Boeing and its customers, including systems engineering, optics design, mechanical design, algorithms, software development, firmware development, electronics, and advanced system modeling and simulations. If you’re interested in working in a fast-paced environment while taking a design from clean sheet of paper through flight demonstration, ideally with some technology that’s never been flown before, then this is the group for you!

  • Development and optimization of firmware for FPGAs, running advanced algorithms in firmware for real-time data processing

  • Design and Optimization of processing and firmware architectures

  • Write and optimize HDL code for FPGAs

  • Technical leadership of FPGA development teams including task assignment, schedule inputs and status reporting

  • Provide technical oversight and guidance including mentoring and coaching team members

  • Technical reports and presentations to customers and senior leadership

  • Support multiple programs and multiple departments / business units

Basic Qualifications (Required Skill/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

  • 10+ years of experience developing firmware for embedded applications (FPGA, etc.)

  • Experience with developing and executing tests to validate system functionality against specifications

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 15+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Experience with integrating and testing firmware / FPGA design with hardware and software

  • 15+ years of experience developing firmware for embedded applications (FPGA, etc.)

  • 5+ years of experience leading engineering teams

  • Active U.S. Top Secret / SCI Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)

  • Experience with design and implementation of real-time software, gateware, firmware for digital communications and / or signal processing algorithms

  • Experience with project management type duties (e.g. status reporting, schedule and budget development and analysis, risk/opportunity assessment, etc.)

  • Experience with HDL coding for Xilinx FPGAs using Vivado

  • Experience Autocoding from Simulink

  • Cybersecurity experience
