Mayo Clinic Laboratories is establishing a new, state-of-the-art laboratory performing site in Southaven, Mississippi. We are seeking an accomplished and visionary physician/scientist leader to serve as Medical Director for this facility. This individual will provide strategic, clinical, and scientific leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality, innovative laboratory services aligned with Mayo Clinic’s standards of excellence.
The Medical Director will oversee the clinical integrity and scientific direction of testing performed at the Southaven site and will play a central role in building a culture of quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement. This leader will work closely with laboratory directors across disciplines, who will report into this role. The Medical Director will report directly to the CEO of Mayo Clinic Laboratories.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide overall medical and scientific leadership for the Southaven laboratory performing site
- Ensure the highest standards of quality, safety, and regulatory compliance across all testing services
- Oversee and support laboratory directors, fostering alignment, accountability, and professional development
- Establish and maintain robust quality assurance and quality improvement programs
- Collaborate with enterprise leadership to align Southaven operations with Mayo Clinic Laboratories’ strategic priorities
- Serve as a key liaison between laboratory operations and executive leadership
- Guide test utilization, validation, and implementation of new assays and technologies
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements (e.g., CLIA, CAP, FDA as applicable)
- Promote a culture of innovation, scientific rigor, and patient-centered care
- Represent the organization in external collaborations, partnerships, and professional activities, as appropriate
- MD, MD/PhD or PhD with board certification in a relevant specialty (e.g., Pathology, Clinical Pathology, or subspecialty)
- Eligibility for medical licensure in the state of Mississippi
- At least 10 years of leadership experience in a clinical laboratory setting, preferably within a high-production, reference laboratory environment
- Demonstrated expertise in laboratory quality systems, regulatory compliance, and accreditation processes
- Strong track record of scientific achievement, innovation, or clinical program development
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and developing physician/scientist leaders
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and executive leadership skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Subspecialty board certification (e.g., Hematopathology, Microbiology, Molecular Pathology, Clinical Chemistry, Transfusion Medicine, etc.)
- Experience in large, integrated health systems or national reference laboratories
- Familiarity with scaling laboratory operations or launching new facilities
- Academic appointment and record of scholarly activity
