Student Research Assistant - Work Study is Available
Case Western Reserve UniversityAbout the role
Description
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience sleep disturbances, with up to 78% having shorter sleep duration (< 7 hours) and lower sleep efficiency (< 85%) compared to children without ASD (20%).
Addressing multiple dimensions of sleep health may help improve behavior and other psychosocial outcomes in ASD.
This proposal aims to modify and test a youth version of the Transdiagnostic Sleep and Circadian Intervention (TranS-C-Youth) to enhance sleep health dimensions (behaviors, satisfaction, alertness/sleepiness, timing/regularity, efficiency, duration) in school-age children with ASD. The specific goals are to: (1) Adapt an existing TranS-C-Youth intervention using a community-engaged approach with pilot results from parents of 12 children with ASD and 10 community advisory board members; and (2) Conduct a 12-week, randomized pilot study to test the effectiveness, feasibility and acceptability of the modified TranS-C-Youth-Autism with 30 children with ASD, to determine whether the intervention improves sleep health dimensions, behavior, quality of life, parental stress, and parental self-efficacy. The proposed pilot study will determine whether the modified intervention improves one or more child and parental outcomes.
This critical funding will provide Dr. Wenzell with the mentorship and essential resources necessary to be competitive for a future NIH R01 grant.
