Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers is seeking a collaborative and analytical individual with underwriting and leadership expertise to lead BSI’s Program group. This dynamic group is responsible for partnering with our MGU partners to evaluate and manage risks, ensure compliance with company policies and underwriting guidelines, and support business strategies through detailed analysis and collaboration with strategic support units. The Program group provides leadership, capital, policy form and other support to MGU partners. As the Program Leader you possess superior underwriting knowledge and will lead partnerships between our MGU partners, our Program group, and field leadership. By leveraging your expertise to educate underwriters, lead over-authority reviews, and lead the successful execution of underwriting strategies, you will influence the overall profitability, growth, and retention of business.

What Will You Do?

  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and strategic counsel to the Program team.
  • Execute underwriting strategies and practices in support of profitable growth objectives in partnership with the MGU partners.
  • Assume responsibility for the profitable growth and retention of a book of business.
  • Meet with MGU partners to foster relationships and engage in meaningful dialogue, both in person and virtually, to influence successful business outcomes. Attend industry conferences to liaise with MGUs and distribution partners to advance business unit goals.
  • Lead collaborative underwriting execution through individual risk over-authority reviews as well as through the evaluation of underwriting integrity.
  • Solicit, evaluate, and land new programs that fit BSI’s cultural dynamics and overall strategies.
  • Take ownership of the development of key underwriting capabilities through coaching and/or trainings while educating underwriters on strategy.
  • Identify, anticipate, and forecast trends and emerging issues. Analyze underwriting results for the Program book of business and provide direction to address findings with key stakeholders.
  • Lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams to contribute to and drive progress in key projects and assignments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Ten or more years of underwriting experience in the professional liability sector as well as managerial experience.
  • Superior knowledge of risk appetite and risk selection, professional liability insurance products, and industry trends.
  • Superior expertise in analyzing and synthesizing complex information to make well-informed underwriting decisions that balance the priorities of the broader business.
  • Ability to lead and sponsor multiple complex priorities and projects simultaneously while maintaining high levels of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders across the enterprise.
  • Relevant industry designation(s) or certification(s).
  • Ability to travel 5-10% of the time.

  • Eight years of underwriting, product knowledge, financial analysis, or risk assessment experience.
