We are seeking a motivated and dedicated Principal photonics design engineer for our next-generation artificial intelligence computing architecture alongside a team of world-class scientists and engineers.

In this role, you will be a key member of the team architecting the world's first photonic computers. This is fundamentally an interdisciplinary team and outside-the-box thinking is the daily norm. You will need both deep expertise in silicon photonics and breadth across other engineering disciplines such as analog and digital electronics, semiconductor device physics, thermal/packaging, and machine learning. The successful candidate will demonstrate eagerness to refresh and grow their competency in these areas.

*You must be able to commute to either our Mountain View or Boston office for this role. Complete remote option is not available.

Responsibilities

• Develop methodologies for high quality components suitable for volume production
• Interface closely with laser and package designers to optimize performance for various form factors and operating conditions
• Actively collaborate across disciplines—with digital, photonics, analog, and physical design teams—to design devices that meet performance and power requirements
• Work with external vendors to ensure timely development and delivery of key photonics related processes and components
• Work with the photonics test team in defining requirements for device characterization, debug and validation
• Engage in problem solving and contributing with novel architectural ideas
• Work closely with hardware and software teams on functionality, interfaces, and documentation

Requirements

• MS or PhD in EE, physics or a related discipline
• 8+ years of experience in integrated optics
• In-depth knowledge of photonic device physics, semiconductor laser and device physics
• Demonstrated track record of ownership of integrated silicon photonics components
• Experience with testing and characterization of photonic devices
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to collaborate in cross-disciplinary team
• Demonstrate strong problem solving skills in problems that do not have obvious solutions

Base Compensation Range: $160,000 to $206,000. In accordance with the Colorado, California and New York law, the range provided is Lightmatter's reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. Actual pay will be based on several factors including work experience, location and education.
