General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Assistant Director, Adult Education, Adjunct Instructors are responsible for supporting students’ reading and math skills development through the 12th-grade level and supporting students’ attempts to complete GED® credentials and prepare for career and post-secondary competency through individualized classroom instruction by developing data- and needs-driven individual learning plans.
The ABE/ASE/GED adjunct instructor is responsible for supporting up to 20 students as they use in-class, text-based, and/or online programs to build math and reading skills. They create individual learning plans, introduce students to text-based and online study programs, measure students’ progress every 40 hours, and support students in and out of class to achieve students’ goals.
This is a part-time temporary position and is part of a pooled adjunct faculty posting for the 2026–2027 academic year. Paid assessment and Adult Education training are available and required.
Essential Functions
- Provide online program expectations to all students upon student entry into the class for Zoom classes. Students who enroll in this course will expect to receive an email, Zoom meeting, or phone call with important course and contact information before the course begins.
- Develop individualized support and educational planning based on student’s assessment results and goals for study. Use data from CASAS pre-measurement of skills and post-measurement of progress to guide students to targeted individualized supports such as text-based and online materials.
- Support students with appropriate advice regarding studies and learning. Advise students about materials and information that may be useful to their improvement, including course adjustments, additional resources, etc.
- Maintain accurate records and participate in retention efforts. Complete student attendance in a timely manner. Encourage and instruct students on how to keep accurate records such as student attendance sign-in sheets. Reach out to students who are not attending and record contacts.
- Arrange or proctor post-testing for students. When alerted, arrange or provide CASAS testing for students and review results upon completion.
- Support students’ preparation for GED® assessments. Provide support for scheduling assessments with myGED.com, and request vouchers from ABE/ASE/GED® program assistant for practice tests and general tests.
- Instruct and support specific math and reading needs. Be prepared to assist and instruct students on reading skills and math knowledge at the K-12 level as needed by the student. Support and enhance text- and online-based explanations and activities for student mastery. Make materials recommendations and adjustments to meet student learning needs.
- Maintain and report a minimum of 8 hours of professional development annually. Complete state- and program-required professional development. Attend mandatory program in-service and meetings. Read and act upon program emails and meetings with updates and information.
